Fly Fishing Report 1/29/13
I finally got around to doing some fishing last saturday. It turned out to be a good choice. We had been in a bit of a deep freeze here and quite frankly the skiing was way better than the fishing. On the main Truckee, after a little rain last week, the ice flushed out, the river came up, and was slightly off color. The water was cool to start at 39 degrees and warmed up to 41 my mid-day with the sun beating down on it. Still needed two sets of socks and long underware under the waders to stay toasty. Didn’t see a bug all day and the two days prior I got reports of Midges and BWO’s all over the place with a couple fish being caught on dries. Ended up nymphing the whole time and tried Midges, BWO’s, SJW, and stones. Hooked four and landed two, not bad for January!
Access and parking is improving along Glenshire Dr. and the Boca inflow area. I looked at driving out to the LT but didn’t feel like dealing with the afternoon thaw. The road is compact snow and ice. Although I didn’t go down there the access at Floriston and Farad is good and the water is a little higher down there.
The local Chapter of Trout Unlimited #103 (of which I am a board member) is starting our fundraising for the Little Truckee River Enhancement project. We are looking for donations to get this project completed this fall. If you have questions or would like to help out give me a call.
See you on the river,
