Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Thursday, December 22, 2011

So far it has been a fairly dry fall and early winter. There is plenty of skiing to be had with most areas going full bore with snowmaking. The fishing is in the winter regulation time of year the that means the Truckee is open from Trout creek to the state line and the Little Truckee in open between Boca and Stampede only! Both are Zero Kill and artificial lures and flies Only. The reservoirs are open with general regulations. It has been clear and cold here for over a Month. The flows are good and you probably want to fish the middle of the day 11am to 4pm. Dress warm! This is the last update for this year and probably won't need to change for the next couple of months.

Truckee and Little Truckee** The fish has been seeing some action with the clear weather. Both river had the similar hatches happening right now. There are small BWO's and Midges hatches for a short period most days. Occasionally the fish are looking up but generally not. It is a nymphing game with little flies right now. The LT has slightly warmer water temps then the Truckee which has been getting a nightly ice formation. Therefore it is not necessary to go out too early. Grab breakfast in town or stop by Mt Hardware for some flies.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede**-*** Prosser and Boca are both mostly frozen with Prosser having really good ice skating in the Alder Creek arm. Stampede has been fishing well and having the mid-day midge hatch. Walking the shoreline you can spot pods of fish working midges and target them for a fish or two before they spook. There have been reports of some nice Maks being caught off the dam at Stampede as well. Stripping some big streamers or nymphing under and indicator has also been productive.

Thanks to everyone for making it another great year. Look forward to seeing you on the water next year,

Brian
