Fishing Report Archives

June 17 2002
In the Truckee Area things are starting to shape up. The Truckee is starting to improve with some evening hatches. A nice break from lead all day long. The Little Truckee has continued to produce nice fish in the special regulation section between Stampede and Boca. Ventured over to the North Yuba for two days last week and had a great time. The fish are smaller and there are tons of them. The Yuba fished well for us all day long. I have heard both good and bad about Davis I'll be going up there some time to make a report. Overall the fishing around here is good and going to get better. The mosquitoes are out and hungry, bring the bug dope.

For those that are wondering when they should start flyfishing or work on the skills needed to catch fish, Start Now! This is a perfect time to take one of my Flyfishing Schools. If you put it off until Labor Day that doesn't leave much of the summer to practice new found skills.

High Country Lakes and Streams**

Some streams are still running high and others are good right now. You should not need too many patterns to work these waters. An assortment of Attractor Dries, midges, and Terrestrials will cover the top. Subsurface small woolly buggers, damsels, PT's and Haresear will do.

Lakes and Reservoirs***

Milton*** Is fishing well especially early and late. Slow stripping a nymph deep during the day is taking a few fish as well. The afternoons have been windy. Try Big Ants 8-12, parachute adams 14-18, sparkle duns 16-20, callibeatis cripples and emergers 14-18, and midges 16-20. For nymphs flashback PTs 14-18. midge pupa 16-20, damsels 8-12 and woolly bugger 10.
Boca ** The water is very cloudy from the afternoon winds stirring up the banks. The inlet arm is still good. Up top Parachute Adams, emergers, and cripples 14-20. Underneath Flashback PT, copper John, haresear 12-18, damsels 8-12 and when all else fail woolly buggers 8-10.
Prosser and Stampede*** Have not fished them for a week my sources tell me they are good in the inlet bays early before the wind kicks in. Same stuff as Boca try a Big Ant for a searching pattern.

Rivers and Streams***

Truckee River** Has been a bear during the day. I had one good morning session last week and ate it the rest. On the good side the evenings have been stellar, don't quit your job yet but, the last hour has been consistent. Many bugs and many sizes to choose from. The Drakes are around in small numbers and the trout have noticed. Crippled Drake 8-10 and E/C caddis14-16 are producing and haven't bothered to try spinners or anything else yet. Should really go nuts the next two weeks.
Little Truckee*** Still an all day producer. Last I checked the water was still high I expect it will change any day now. More bugs are on top but have yet to get a take. Down and dirty with Flashback PTs, Copper John 14-18. SJW 12 and Prince nymph 8.
Sagehen** Is very nice always some different flowers blooming in there. Try small attractor dries and ant patterns, add a dropper if you have to.
North Yuba***1/2 Excellent fishing here all day long. Spent part of two days there last week and had a ball watching those frisky little bows try to crush my stimulator. Up top large mayfly, cranefly, and Stonefly patterns were the ticket 6-10. Even where taking my yarn indicator. Underneath, the stonefly ruled 8-10 followed by the caddis pupa 12 and a Little Yellow Stone Nymph 12.

That is all for now. The next ten days are busy, might be late with next report.

Get out and fish!
Brian
