I really like this time of year the crowds are gone the weather is beautiful and the trout are still willing to eat a fly. The Truckee River flow out of Tahoe has been lowered to a very fishable level all the way to Boca inflow which has been turned up keeping the lower section of the river about where its been all summer. Fishing has been good in both stretches with indicator nymphing the most productive method. Some dry fly activity in the afternoon. The Little Truckee is still at 32 cfs and the fish are spooky but catchable. Use extreme stealth, upstream approach, smaller flies, and 7x tippet. Have fun. Made a few forays to Stampede and had some good success with Rainbows and Browns. Saw some very large fish cruising the shoreline out there. Have seen similar activity on Prosser as well but haven't given it much rod time. I haven't heard anything about Milton or the N. Yuba the colors should be changing in those areas soon so the ride alone may be worth the trip.
I will be not be available from September 25th to October 6th. If I don't have any trips when I get back I will probably close for the season around the 15th of October. Use me or lose me!
Truckee River***
Nice flows from Boca to Tahoe City. Nymphing is productive all day and dry fly fishing has been good in the afternoon. Para Adams, Bivisabe Dun, and Caddis 16-18, BH Prince 16, Turkey BH 14-16 and a BH Woolly Bugger size 8.
Little Truckee River**
Still tough fishing here. Expect to see some new fish move up in the next couple of weeks. Small dries and nymphs on fine tippet. Occasionally, a Woolly Bugger has worked.
N. Yuba**
I haven't been here for a few weeks don't suppose much has changed except the colors of the trees, should be gorgeous.
Stampede and Prosser Reservoirs***
There is still a nice hatch of callibeatis and midges coming off midday or until the wind starts whipping up. A few fish have taken dries up top 14-18 mayfly and midge emergers but, most action has been under the surface. Either dead drifting nymphs and pupa or stripping nympths and woolly buggers over the weedbeds. I feel there is a large surprise lurking in Stampede for someone and probably more than one.
Get out and Fish!
