May 8, 2003 It's still snowing on the Sierra Crest! I skied 9" of new powder today at Alpine and it was great. The snow is gone around Truckee and as you go east the snow level is creeping up the Mountains. We had an incredible spring or winter in spring. There is plenty of snow up high to take care of any potential lack of water this summer. Should it warm up the runoff will start but, until then skiing and fishing are the things to do. Both in the same day I might add. It's all about the recreation here. No crowds and good deals in the restaurants this time of year.
High Country Lakes And Streams A month or more out. Depends on where you are going. Check with the USFS for the road conditions.
Local Lakes and Reservoirs ** Watch the shoreline its probably softer than it looks. The fish are in the cruising shallows and stacked up in the inlets. Woolly Buggers, PT's, and Midge Pupa should cover the subsurface. Watch for the afternoon BWO's floating down the inlet streams they can make for some nice dry fly action.
The Truckee and Little Truckee **½ The Truckee flows are clear, cold(45-48F), and fishable. Dress warm. For the Dry Fly Purist there is a nice afternoon hatch (1-4pm) of BWO's size 18-16 and March Browns size 14-12. Fish are working them in the slower slicks! Approach with stealth a bad cast puts them off. Nymphing down and dirty with big stones, Copper John's, egg patterns, and Prince Nymphs size 6-14 should do the trick. Some nice fish have been landed but it takes some time.
The Little Truckee flows are moderate, cold(42-45F), and very fishable. There are some BWO's and Midge's in the afternoons (1-3pm) have not witnessed any working fish here yet but, my scouts had a good dry fly session working BWO's size 16-18 early in the week. Nymphing has been the winner here. The fish are in the deeper pools and runs just like the Truckee. Be prepared to lose some flies. Big Prince's and Turkey Beadheads size 6-8, Copper Johns, PT's, eggs, SJW's, Brassies, and Flashback PT's as a dropper are working here. We are averaging about a fish an hour in the 15-19" range.
Remember to dress accordingly and try skiing in the morning and fishing the afternoon it’s a great spring combo.
See ya on the snow/water
