June 18, 2003
The runoff is starting to ease a bit on the local rivers and streams however there is still a bit of snow left in the high country. It's now time for the water regulators to monkey with the flows as The Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede is at 31cfs. Overall fishing has been pretty good and should get better just in time for the 4th of July. The Big Bugs of June are out and about.
High Country Lakes and Streams *
The road to Milton is open now. I have heard any reports from there yet. Probably still fairly cold. Upper elevation streams are still high.
Local Lakes and Reservoirs** to***
The evenings at the inlets has been good for Prosser, Boca, and Stampede. Lots of mayflys. I hear the smallmouth in Prosser are taking poppers on the surface. Haven't tried it yet though. Working a woolly bugger or clouser is always a good choice.
Rivers and Streams***
The Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede was great with the higher flows now the flow is at 31cfs. The fish are there but a little spooky, approach the holes quietly. Smaller midge, mayfly, and caddis patterns 18-22 are needed. Change flies often until you find one that works. There have been some good hatches and a few fish are working.
The Truckee River from the River Ranch Lodge on down is shaping up nicely. The water temps are 56-61 and the Drakes and Stones are out. Last to nights have not seen the fish working them but, they will. Have had moderate success working a woolly bugger size 6 in the deeper runs. Indicator nymphing has been inconsistent. The most success has been walking the bank and fishing to fish that are working. Try a stimulator size 10, any parachute mayfly pattern 14, emerging caddis 14, light cahill 16, little yellow stone 14, and the biggest mayfly cripple you can get 10+.
The next two-weeks on the Truckee should be very good. If you can make the time get up here and fish, I am.
See you on the river,
Brian |
