July 28
Sorry for the late update. The fishing has been very good and I've been very busy. The heat that started on the 23rd has slowed the mid-day fishing on all of the waters. The afternoon thundershowers are helping to improve the morning and evening fishing. A big cool down would be nice right now. Wherever you plan on going up here fish early or late and skip the mid-day.
Check out the steelhead trips I'm offering on the Rogue River on the Trips page. It you have any questions feel free to call me.
High Country Lakes and Streams**
The anglers that I've been communicating with have had either really good fishing or really slow fishing in the higher lakes and streams. Thunder showers have turned a few streams off color for a day or two. For the streams try attractor dries and terrestrials on top and PT nymphs, haresears, and caddis patterns underneath.
Local Lakes and Reservoirs***
The inlets are still the areas to target on most of the Lakes and reservoirs. I was having decent mid-day action at Stampede but that too is now an early or late option. Boca is now mostly Jet skis and boats except for the inlet which has been hot at times. Prosser has warmed up a bunch and I hear the smallmouth are biting pretty good. I've had the best luck on smallmouth here with a green crystal bugger stripped nest to cover or the rocks of the dams. Pretty fun. Flies for trout Dries: Parachute adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-16, Martis Midge 14-16. Nymphs: Flashback PT's, PT's 14-18, Blood midge 14-18, callibeatis 14-16, damsels 10-12, and woolley buggers 6-10.
Rivers and Streams***
The Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede has had some great days on the PMDs and Green Drakes. The Drakes appear to be done now but, the PMD's are still showing up. The fish are educated and will often examine your fly several moments before eating it, if at all. The flow was monkeyed with during the day several times last week and didn't appear to help the fishing at all. As for patterns try something different they have seen all the commercial stuff out there. They could probably tell you who tied it.
The Truckee has been ON and OFF. The flows are up again around 400+/- in town and 600+ below Boca. Water temps last week were reaching 73 degrees the recent thunderstorms have helped to cool it off. Look for the fish in the faster pocker water. There is still a nice evening caddis hatch and egg laying caddis are around all day with a few oddball mayflies thrown in. For Dries try Elk Hair Caddis 14-18, Little Yellow stones 14-16, Stimulator 8-16, Light Cahill 14-18, rusty spinners 14-18, and EC Caddis 14-18. For Nymphing try Copper Johns 12-16, Haresears 10-16, Birdsnest 14-16, soft Hackles 14-18, crawfish 6-8, and woolley buggers 6.
See you on the river.
