Fishing Report Archives

April 23, 2004
Saturday the 24th is opening day for the rivers and streams in our area. The weather has been a little off this week and is expected to clear for the weekend. With the new snow in the upper elevations warm temps could cause the rivers and streams to cloud a bit. Overall we are a little below average for water this year due to the warm and sunny March. With the cooler temps and snow/rain this week we are still looking good for water. Mother nature may not be done yet! The bulk of the runoff has already occurred and I don't think things will get to out of shape even when it warms up. Most of the streams are running cool (mid 40's) and clear. I think that it will be another great year in the Truckee Area. Be sure to check out my trips page only about five weeks left for Pyramid Lake!

High Country Lakes And Streams
You can get part way up Jackson Meadows road but the area just received more snow and should be snowbound until June. I'll keep checking on it.

Local Lakes And Reservoirs
Stampede, Boca, and Prosser all are open year-round and have good access right now. One word of caution "MUD". I've already heard of two rigs getting very stuck trying to get next to the water. With the recent rain you may have to walk a little bit.

All have been experiencing good fishing at times. When the wind isn't blowing the fish have been looking up for Midges 18-20, Quigley cripples 18-14, and Adams 18-14. Nymphing under and indicator with midges 18-20, flashback PT's 16-14, copper johns 16-14 and black AP's 16-14. Dragging a black or green woolly bugger does the trick as well.

Rivers And Streams Opens Saturday April 24!
The main Truckee is running at 200 cfs through the town of Truckee and picking up water the closer to Reno you get. It's cool and clear. There have been reports of rising fish on an afternoon mayfly hatch but, your best bet will be nymphing most of the time or until you spot a working fish. My fly choices are stone flies 10-6, AP's 16-12, Prince 14-10, Copper Johns 16-14, egg patterns, and Bird's nest 10-16.

The Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede was at 245 cfs and going up when I started writing this report, it could be higher. Again nymphing is the way to go but, I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of beatis hatch. Be ready with a Griffiths Gnat 18-16 and an Adams or sparkle Dun 18-14. For nymphing Black AP's 16-14, PT's, Flashback PT's 18-14, Midge Pupa 18, Egg Patterns, and Copper John 18-14.

This should be a much nicer opener then last seasons snow storm and the flows are great! Well see you out on the river.

Brian
