Fly Fishing Reports - Archives

Tuesday July 12, 2005
What a difference a week makes. The weather warmed up finally and so has the fishing. There is now access to the higher lakes and streams. They're in pretty good shape, as well as the mosquitoes. Take the bug repellant. The Truckee is also fishing much better with the warmer temps and good flows. Mostly ignored by fly fishers, the reservoirs are fishing pretty good with great callibeatis hatch going strong in the mornings.

Those interested in the fall steelhead trips check out the trips page. September and October are fly fishing only on the Upper Rogue and can be pretty exciting.

High Country Lakes and streams***

The upper elevation lakes and streams are starting to come into shape. Fished a few of the smaller creeks last week and had a blast. Ants seemed to be the bug of choice all others were ignored even though there were mayflies and caddis about.
Truckee River *** The water has warmed up and the fish are more active. The Drakes kind of snuck off late in the evenings but, the fish are certainly still looking up for them. There are also plenty of Yellow Sallies and a few PMDs out and about. High Sticking in the pocket water has also been good as the fish move into the more oxygenated water as it warms during the day. For dry fly action try: Parachute Adams14-10, Stimulator 10-6, Elk Hair Caddis 14-10, Drakes 10, Quigley Cripples 14-10, and PMD's. For nymphs try: Copper John 14-10, Hairsear 14-12, Flashback PT 14-10, Princes 10, Drake nymphs 10-8, Little Yellow stones 14-12, Golden Stones 10-6, and Woolly Buggers 10-6.

Little Truckee River *** The fish here are educated but catchable. Be stealth and make good presentations. For dries: PMD's 16-14, BWO's 18-16, cripples 18-16, Sparkle Duns 18-16, Spinners 18-14, Drakes 10, Parachute Adams 18-10, Griffiths Gnat 20-18, and Palamino Midge 22-20. For nymphs try: Haresear 18-14, PT's 20-10, HBI's 16-14, Birdsnest 18-16, Prince 10, Drakes 10 and Brassies 20-16..

Prosser ***, Boca **, and Stampede *** There is a good Callibeatis hatch in the mornings on Prosser and Stampede. The fish are eating the nymphs and cripples pretty steady for a couple of hours. There are also large schools of bait fish in close to shore and I witnessed from outside my casting range a few fish chowing on them as well. For dries try: Martis Midge 16-14, Griffiths Gnat 16-14, Parachute Adams 16-12, Spinners 16-14, Cripples 16-12, and Ants 10. For nymphs and Streamers try: Haresears 14-12, PT's 14-12, Brassie 14-12, Midge Pupa 16-12, Copper Johns 16-12, Clouser Minnows 10-6, and Woolly Buggers 10-6.

See you on the water,

Brian
