Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Shooter and I just returned from a two-week road trip through Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.  We did a little skiing, biking, and, of course, fishing.  We managed to hit some great rivers; the Rogue, Deschutes, Yakima, Rocky Ford, Upper Sac, and the Yuba.  Its time, now, to get down to business and fish around our area.

The rivers here are in good shape, looks like we may have mild runoff with the lower snow pack this season.  The watermaster is jacking the flows around starting yesterday.  Check the flows on my Venues page to decide which areas to fish.   Bugs are starting to pop and I think we could have some excellent dry fly action in a few weeks.  I am watching for Drakes and the BIG carpenter ants.

Truckee River**-*** From River Ranch to Boca inflow is fishing good now.  The flows are starting to get bumped around and could change any day.  Below Boca is higher but still fishable.  Big attractors with droppers have been doing good as well as indicator nymphing.  For dries try:  Stimulator 10-6,  Royal Wluff 10-8, Parachute Adams 10-20, and Emerger/cripples 10-20.  For nymphs:  Stones 10-6, Prince 12-6, PT’s 16-10, SJW, Haresear 16-10, Micro Mays 20-16, and Midges 20-16.

Little Truckee**  Use Caution! The flows are up and wading can be difficult here.  The dry fly action is not as productive as nymphing or streamers.  There are bugs around look for showing fish in the eddys and slower tailouts.  Bring out the lead, the water is really moving.  For dries try:  Elk Hair Caddis 18-14,  Compara Duns 20-14, Parachute Adams 20-14, Griffiths Gnat 18-16, and Emerger/Cripples 20-14.  For nymphs try:  Zebra Midge 10-16, Mirco May 20-16, PTs 18-14, SJW, eggs, Prince 18-10, and Stones 16-10.  For streamers Try a Woolly Bugger or Stanley Streamer 10-6.

Local Reservoirs**  The pond are starting to slowly fill and may not get full this season.  Several of the feeder streams are not pumping much water so the fish are spread out.  I have not hit them much yet, but the inlets are always a good start and Boca has been good.  Some lucky guy got a nice Makinaw there a few days ago.  For steamers try Woolly Buggers, Stanley Streamers, and leeches in 10-6.  For nymphs try:  Midge Pupa 18-14, PT’s 18-14, Brassies 18-14, and Damsel or Dragon fly nymphs 12-8.

High Country Lakes and Streams There is still snow in the higher elevations and it may take a few more weeks for things to shape up.

If your looking for a trip or to brush up you skills feel free to contact me and we’ll put together an outing.

Brian
