Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Tuesday, July 10 2007

Hard to believe that it has been a month since my last report. The fishing in the area has been as good as it gets especially the Truckee River. Awesome hatches and working fish. The Green Drakes this year hatched in huge numbers and the fish were on them without hesitation. On the Little Truckee, the fish were being their usual grumpy selves, if you can make the right presentation they will eat. The North Yuba above Downieville was on fire as well, lots of bugs and willing fish. The reservoirs should be prime for the bass now. With the warmer weather the trout have moved to deeper water during the mid-day. Currently, the flows are consistent and so is the fishing.

Truckee River *** The Big river fishing has slowed a bit with the warmer weather. There is good flow coming out of Tahoe and this water is warm by mid afternoon. Fishing in the morning from River Ranch on down has been great, then move below Boca outflow for the late afternoon or evening. Nymphing is always the best bet but, a big attractor with a nymph dropper has been effective as well with some nice fish crushing the Attractor. Streamers have also produced a few fish. There are still plenty of caddis, Little yellow stones, and may flies about the usual nymphs and dries will work. Haresear nymph and Stimulator dry are my choice.

Little Truckee*** The LT has been good for those that use some stealth and can make the presentation. The hatches have been kind of light on the PMDs but, the Drakes are just starting. MIdges, terrestrails, and a few smaller caddis round out the mix here. The summer slim is thick and haven't done much nymphing, no need really the fish will eat a well presented dry or the dropper hung short underneath the dry. The midges are small 20-24, the caddis 16-20, and the terrestrails are varied 10-16.

North Yuba*** Great fishing to be had here! Aftractor dries and a small dropper are pretty darn effective. Lots of caddis(14-16) and small stones(14-18) coming off. The bigger fish are lurking in the depths of the bigger pools. While the rest of the fish are in the pocket water waiting to hammer anything that passes by.

High elevation Lakes and Streams*** Some streams may already be done but, the bigger ones are good to go. Lots of terrestrails, caddis, may flies, and midges flying about.

Local Reservoirs**-*** The lower water levels makes it hard to launch bigger boats at Prosser and Boca. The ramp at Stampede is still good though. Most of the inlet streams are now quite low and flowing warm water. The Trout are in close early and retreat to deeper water during the afternoon and return for the late evening rise. The Callibeatis(14-16) and Blood Midges(14-16) are hatching in the morning. If nothing is happening go deep with a Woolly Bugger around structure or drop-offs. The Bass near the dams are feisty and ready to eat anything with rubber legs. If you trying to get a kid started fishing take them to one the dams and let them catch a few of the bass its pretty fun.

That's pretty much it. Fishing is good. Interested in a trip just e-mail me or call and we'll set something up.

See you on the water,

Brian
