Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Monday, September 10, 2007

The fishing has been pretty good overall considering the warm temps and overall lack of moisture. Most of the crowds have gone home and the fish are settling in to their fall routine. In a couple of weeks the Kokanee and Browns should start moving up the tributaries to spawning grounds with the Rainbows right behind looking for an easy meal. Most of the smaller creeks have come and gone unless we get an early monsoon they are done until next year. Overall its been a fairly consistent year with several nice fish being landed on dries. I love to watch fish take a dry. This fall should be more of the same with smaller flies.

Truckee River *** The main Truckee has been fishing well in the first half of the day but, that could change with some cooler weather to spur on the fall feeding frenzy. Most of the bugs have hatched although there has been a nice caddis hatch in the evenings. Fishing with a dry and a dropper is still a good bet with many fish crushing the dry. The fish are sensitive to bad presentation so a drag free drift is required. Indicator nymphing the deeper holes with a woolly bugger or crawdad pattern and trailing a small nymph has also been consistent. For dries try: Stimulator 8-10, Turck's Turantula 10, Parachut Adams 12-10, Caddis 14-18, E/C caddis 14-18 and Quigley Cripples 14-20. For nymphs: Haresear 14-20, Micro May 16-20, Hogan's Better Beatis 16-20, Copper John's 14-20, Midges 18-22, and Flashback Pheasant tails 14-20. For streamers try Woolly Bugger 8-10 and Crawdad 8.

Little Truckee River** The LT is tough right now. Small Beatis and Caddis 18-24, good presentation, and some stealth will get you a couple of fish. Be prepared for lots of refusals.

Local Reservoirs **

Prosser and Stampede have been kicking out some nice Bass off the dams on streamers. Taped a Smallmouth at 17" last week. Boca has been producing some very large fish where the Little Truckee comes in. It's a gamble as to what you'll bring in Rainbow, Brown, or Mackinaw. Most are on streamers and lucky few anglers a getting them to eat dries. For dries: Parachute Adams, Quigley Cripple, and Pullover 18-24. For nymphs: Flashback Pheasant tail, Copper John, and Micro May 18-24. Streamers and Leeches 6-10.

For those of you wishing to take a trip with me I only have a week before I leave to guide steelhead fishing for Morrison's Lodge on the Rouge.

If you are interesting in a Steelhead trip with me, contact Morrison's directly at 1-800-826-1963.

If you are interesting in fishing the Truckee Area after September 20th you'll need to contact one of the Truckee Guide Network: Frank 530-587-7333, Doug 530-412-2988, or John 530-582-8548.

I will return for the winter season November 1st. Remember, the Truckee and Little Truckee are open for Year-round angling.

See you on the water,

Brian and Shooter
