Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Thrusday April 2, 2009
Wow, where does the time go? It seems as though another spring is slowly approaching and before you know it we'll be wet wading and casting dries to working fish. It been awhile since the last update but, the skiing was better than the fishing. Which is good news in the water department. There have been several storms over the last two months that dumped a fair amount of moisture on our hills and it has continued to stay cool. At Alpine Meadows, where I spend the winter, we are at 100% for snow and 105% for water as of 3/31. That will be good for our streams this summer. It looks like there is more on the way next week. The fish are starting to come around after a long cold winter. Now is the time to ski in the morning and fish in the afternoon!
Truckee River ** The Truckee is fair right now and rapidly improving. Access is good all through the winter section. The water temps are moving up a few degrees in the afternoon and the flows are stable and clear. There are some Skwalas, Little Browns Stones, and on overcast days BWO's fly about. The fish are still eating subsurface however. Nymphing with Stonefly patterns 8-10, haresear 8-14, PT's 16-18, Midges 18-22, and Black AP's 14-18 should do the trick. Sculpin streamer patterns have also been working.
Little Truckee**-**** The LT is really good or, really slow it just depends on the day. The fish have all been fat and sassy. The same bugs that are working on the Big Truckee are
also working on the LT. The road is clear of snow.
Local Reservoirs ***
Boca has just become ice free and fishing good. A little bit of everything is working. The water is coming up rapidly and the fish are out cruising the shallows for an easy meal. Stampede is ice free but, I have not had a chance to get out there yet. Prosser I have not made it to yet either.
I wanted to thank those that stopped by The Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton back in February and said hello.
See you on the water,
Brian
