Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Friday May 1, 2009

The fishing in the area has been pretty good despite the winter like weather we have been experiencing. There has been a surprising amount of fish up and eating BWO's. Nymphing has accounted for the most fish, as you would expect. As long as it stays cold at night in the higher elevations the runoff should be pretty mild. We should have a nice amount of water to deal with this season. If this a rain event keeps up we could see the rivers blow out for awhile. Check the flows link on my Venues page.

The Rainbows are starting to spawn in several areas stay of the redds and leave the spawners alone!

Currently, Shooter and I are on a little road trip to Montana, Washington, Oregon, and back home around May 8th. The fishing in Montana was, well Montana like, lots of fish and few people to contend with. It could have something to do with the fact that is has snowed for four days and is cold. We are heading to another state in search of some nicer weather.

Truckee *** The main Truckee has been kicking out some nice fish on small dries and the usually spring nymphing rigs. Flows are coming up a steady rate and the water remains high and clear at this point. That could change with this rain event. My fellow TNG guides report lots of BWO's as well and that nymphing with a PT behind a bigger stone has been productive. For dries try: Skwala stones 10-6, Royal Wluff 10-8, Parachute Adams 10-20, and Emerger/cripples 10-20. For nymphs: Stones 10-6, Prince 12-6, PT’s 16-10, SJW, Haresear 16-10, Micro Mays 20-16, and Midges 20-16.

Little Truckee**-*** The LT has been tougher than usual for spring due to the ease of access this winter. The rainbows have started to spawn give them a chance and stay off the redds! On the overcast days there has been some great action at the inlet and the bigger runs up stream on midges and BWO's Elk Hair Caddis 18-14, Compara Duns 20-14, Parachute Adams 20-14, Griffiths Gnat 18-16, and Emerger/Cripples 20-14. For nymphs try: Zebra Midge 10-16, Mirco May 20-16, PTs 18-14, SJW, eggs, Prince 18-10, and Stones 16-10. For streamers Try a Woolly Bugger.

Reservoirs** With the increased flows any of the inlets should be holding fish. Try a streamer as a searching technique and then a nymphing rig once you locate the fish.

N. Yuba Too high give it a few weeks

High Country A little early yet.

See you on the river,

Brian
