Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Thursday, May 21, 2009

We have been experiencing a pretty good warm spell over the last five days. All of the major creeks in the are running pretty high with the exception of the Little Truckee below Stampede. The Truckee is bouncing up and down on a daily basis. The good news is the carpenter ants are out! A few fish are looking up for them despite the erratic water flows mother nature has tossed us. I was hoping for a few cold nights in the upper elevations but, it doesn't hurt to dream. The best bet now is the Little Truckee or one of the local reservoirs. I have a great boat for fishing these impoundments and if you have not tried this you missing some good fishing, especially now. If your going to one of the local rivers be sure to check my fishing-venues page for the flow links.

Truckee River*-** Well, it is up in the afternoon and off color, by morning it has dropped and cleared a bit. Fishing from Tahoe City to Glenshire Bridge will be your best choice now. There have been some sporadic hatches of BWO's and March Browns mid-day. The big ants are out too. Check the flows on my fishing venues page, the river appears to be dropping and could be in good shape in a few days. Nymphing has been the way to go here try: Golden stones (6-10), Prince (8-12), PT(10-16), SJW''s, Bird's Nest (14), and Hares Ear (12-16). Larger streamers in (2-4) have picked up fish as well.

Little Truckee River*** The Little Truckee tailwater is flowing around 70cfs and in good shape. Most of the action is in the upper reaches and inlet area. There are some midges and beatis hatching here but, most action is nymphing those small bugs. For dries try: Parachute Adams (16-20), Griffiths Gnat (18-20), Compara Dun (16-20) and Royal Wulff 10. For nymphing try: Micro May (18-20), Copper John (18-20), Haresear (16-20), Midges (18-22) and PT's (18-20).

N. Yuba** I have not been over there yet and it looks to be a little high.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede**-*** The inlet areas of all three reservoirs are fishing good. Water temps are in the high 50's. The callibeatis are hatching on Prosser and well as midges. The ant got some love there as well. Stripping streamers near structure has also been productive. This is usually the time of year for some big smallmouth to get caught. The ant(8-10) with a midge dropper in the shallows could be the ticket. For nymphs try: Flashback PT 14, Poxyback calibeatis 14, blood midges (12-14) and brassies (12-16). Try streamers in (8-10) range.

Milton** The road is now open and I had a report of some good fishing on midges. I have not made it there myself yet.

Interested in booking a stillwater or river trip give me a call,

Brian
