Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Saturday, June 17, 2010

Conditions here are starting to change. The river is still high and off color in the late afternoon. It has been nice, sunny, and a bit breezy. All of the bugs are in the waters waiting for the right conditions to do their thing. Overall, nymphing and streamer fishing are the ticket, it will change and soon. Get your gear out, clean it, and practice a bit. This time of the season a lake is a pretty good bet and a great way to start off the season. The reservoirs here are in good condition and pumping out the trout. Give me a call and we can set up stillwater trip, tune-up your cast, or work on your streamer technique. How about that switch rod with a short Skagit head, a tip, and big ol' conehead? Oh yeah, the ANTS ARE HERE!

Looking ahead now would be a good time to think about booking a steelhead trip to the Upper Klamath or Rouge Rivers this fall. I will be offering trips in late September through October. I prefer to swing flies for these magic fish using single and two-handed rods. Lets Go!

Truckee **-*** Not much has changed here still some runoff and the river is clouding up in the late afternoon. Some BWO's and March Browns coming off in the late afternoon and the fish are not yet looking up. All of the bugs are in the river waiting for the appropriate conditions to hatch. Water temps are peaking in the mid 50's and the mid-day has been good. The fish still seem a little sluggish so check the deeper slower water or places with good current relief. There is a ton of food coming down the river and no one fly has been the ticket. Play around with Big and Small and light and dark to find a combo that works. There are small caddis, BWO's. March Browns, ANTS, and midges hatching but not many fish eating from the surface, Yet.

LIttle Truckee** The flows here are still low and the fish need a break from us. Do a stillwater boat trip with me instead.

Prosser Reservoir*** Prosser has been good both from the boat and shore. The water is almost up to full pool and the surface temps were in the upper 50's. Blood midges and Callibeatis have been starting to come off and there are the Ants and beetles blowing in as well. I have had great days from the boat here both stripping flies and fishing under an indicator. Have not caught a smallmouth yet but, they are there and waiting to bend the fly rod.

Boca Reservoir**-*** Boca is filling up nicely and the surface temps here are in the upper 50's. The inlet area is still going strong with a nice evening rise to small beatis and midges(20-22). Stripping a streamer through here on a type II line or intermediate line can bring big surprises.

Stampede Reservoir** Stampede is still pretty low but coming up. I have yet to drown a fly here cause the other stuff has been so good. My friends tell me that it is fishing well. The trolling guys are doing good on the Kokanee and Mackinaw. Judging from the other two reservoirs that Blood Midges and Callibeatis are happening here as well.

High Country Lakes and Streams* Still out of play maybe a couple more weeks.

Overall the fishing is good and will get better. These next couple of weeks will be the time to be here. If I have questions or looking for guide service please feel free to contact me.

See you on the water,
Brian
