April 18 2002
Well, you know what they say about weather in the mountains? If you don't like it wait 5 minutes. The previous three weeks have been awesome unseasonably warm and sunny. Then bam! Winter is back. We've had 33" of snow over the past two days and very cold temps. The skiing has been outstanding here at Alpine Meadows.
Until this latest cold spell the fly fishing has been fair for the angler willing to spend some time and try various approaches.
The Lakes - Donner, Prosser, Boca, and Stampede were providing some action that varied from day to day. The most productive flies have been smaller nymphs and streamers. The occasional fish was taken on dry flies, BWO's and Winter Stones. That's the occasional fish.
The Rivers and Streams - are Closed until April 27!
The Prognosis - for the April 27 opener. The water will be cold, slightly off color, and high. The high country streams will still be inaccessible. If it warms up like the weather man says We will be in the peak of the runoff or it will be snowing. Either way you best bet is indicator nymphing and big streamers. Try large stonefly and prince nymphs. For streamers a sculpin or dark woolly bugger should do the trick. I suggest fishing later when the water may have warmed up a degree or two. Maybe even ski in the morning at Alpine and fish the afternoon. Good Luck! Wade Safely. |
