June 6 2002
Things up here are certainly improving the weather is warm, the flora is greening up, and the water is flowing. The flowers in sagehen meadow are brilliant right now. Still not a lot of fish looking up on the rivers yet the reservoirs are seeing some surface action before the afternoon wind kicks in. The top water action on the rivers could start Any day now. Last week saw a light flight of termites and ants.
High Country Lakes and Streams
Still not there yet.
Lakes and Reservoirs***
Milton*** The road is open and the fishing is good went up for a few hours and landed to nice browns and had several takes. There were callibeatis, midges, and terrestrials up top tried them for a while then went subsurface. BHPTs, FBPT, and Brassies 16-20. slow strip did the trick.
Boca*** As you can tell when you drive by the inlet is a good choice. A client on Monday got a Hat Trick there a Rainbow, a Kokanee, and a Brown. Pretty Cool. Haven't observed many surface feeders there yet but that may quickly change. Any PT, Prince, Haresear, Brassie, and SJW 12-18. Under and indicator or intermediate line.
Prosser and Stampede** I haven't hit these to hard this week, however my contacts say they are producing, with occasional dry fly action before the afternoon wind. Check the inlets, the various arms and coves. For dry fly try Adams, ants, beetles, midges and cripples 12-16. Down under the basic stuff Damsels, PTs, Leeches, and Woolly Buggers 8-16 on an intermediate line should bring success.
Rivers and Streams** to ***
Small streams such as Sagehen are coming into shape now. Expect a crowd on the weekends. I would try an Attractor dry with a PT or Haresear dropper dapped along the cutbanks. Watch out for the Treefish.
The Truckee** has been good for a fish an outing. The runoff has brought the flows up a bit. The river is still fishable try the edges and slower areas. Nymphing is the way to go. There is plenty of junk in the water for the fish to choose from so you might have to try changing flies often and adding Heavy Weight. Golden Stones and Streamers 6-8, Little Yellow Stones, Copper Johns, Prince, Haresear, Rockworms, and anything in your box that you don't mind losing 10-16.
The Little Truckee*** This tailwater is not good for huge numbers of fish but the size of the fish right now should make anyone's day. The flows were bumped up last week making the wading difficult and pushing the fish into deeper cover. There has been some various mayfly hatches but, like the Truckee, the fish haven't been looking up. I tried a Big Royal Wluff for a change from nymphing and didn't have any luck. But, the Prince, PT, FBPT, SJW, and BHBrassie have taken some nice fish.
See you on the river,
Brian |
