Fishing Report Archives

July 1 2002
Fishing in the area has been good. The Drakes have come and gone since the last report. The Truckee has been fishing good most of the day now that they are done meshing with the flows. The Little Truckee has gotten a little tougher the fish are seeing a lot of people on the weekends. Made another Trip to the North Yuba and had great fun, nothing huge but lots of suicidal fish. Been having too much fun guiding the river to fish the lakes, but my friends tell me the smallmouth fishing is heating up.

Expect to find people in your favorite fishing hole this week. Met a few rude ones already. A little extra effort in the etiquette department could go a long way to making everyone's day better. Have a safe and fun 4th.

High Country Lakes and Streams***

There is still some snow on the north slopes but most of the runoff is finished and the High Country should be in decent shape. Look to these out of the way places to avoid the crowds. Don't forget to take the bug spray and your Humpies! A selection of Attractor Dries and nymphs should do the trick.

Lakes and Reservoirs**

Prossor, Boca, and Stampede - As it warms up around here the Jetskis come out and the fish go deeper. Go out early or late in the day and try that heavy sinking line. Haven't fished any lakes lately but here the smallmouth are taking Woolley Buggers and other streamer off the dams.

Milton*** Check my last report for list of flies that were working there. I had quite a few friends have the same experience I did. They broke off several big fish. Getting hooked up wasn't a problem but landing the big guys was.

Rivers and Streams***

Truckee*** The hatches are in full swing right now with a brief appearance of the Green Drakes. PMD's, Little Yellow Stones, and others are out as well. Fishing with a dry and a dropper should bring steady results. Several nice fish have been landed and many more have sped away with a stinging lip. I have too many fish stories to put in here, it's been really fun! Up Top Stimulators 8-12, E/C Caddis 12-16, caddis 12-16, Para Adams 10-18, Quigley Cripples 10-16, Yellow Sallies 14. Underneath try swinging some soft hackles 14-16, or dead drift nymphs like PT and Haresears 10-16, Prince 8-12, Birdsnest 12-16, and Stonefly nymphs 8-14.

Little Truckee*** Between Boca and Stampede the river has been seeing some action especially at the upper turnout. Respect the other anglers and the fish. Expect to find this water crowded around the 4th. The fish have wised up a bit. Stealth and some patience will pay off. There have been Midmorning hatches of Green Drakes, and BWO's. The PMD Hatches are not far off. Try a Cripples and Emergers 10-20, BWO'S 16-20, Yellow Sallies 14-16. Underneath try the FBPT 14-20, Prince 8-12, SJW 12, and Brassie 16-20.

N. Yuba*** The North Yuba is fishing good. Lots of little fish are taking most stuff that you throw at them. Stimulator 8-10, Caddis and E/C caddis 10-16, Para Adams 10-16, and Cripples 10-16. Nymphing wasn't too tough with a Haresear 12-16 or Stonefly 8-14.

Happy 4th of July
Brian
