Fishing Report Archives

May 21, 2003
We've skipped spring up here and moved directly into early summer. It's nice, warm, and everything is quickly coming to life. This is the last weekend to ski at Alpine and fish in the same day. They close on Sunday the 25th. Went skiing and nowmobileing last weekend and there is still a ton of snow above 7000'. So let's get to the Fishing Report.

High Country Lakes and Streams
On Sunday they had the road to Jackson Meadows had been plowed out to a point a mile or two past Webber Lake. Most lakes and streams are four to six weeks out.

Local Lakes and Reservoirs **
I haven't been spending too much time here. However the inlets are producing some fish. There is still and afternoon BWO hatch coming off on the streams and drifting into the Lakes. For the subsurface flies Woolley Buggers, FBPT 16-14, Midge pupa 16-20, and drifting an egg pattern around inlets. The Top water is still mostly BWO's 16-18 and midges 18-20. The terrestrials are starting to appear but, no ants yet.

Rivers and Streams ***
The Truckee River is up and muddy by mid-afternoon if it doesn't freeze in the mountains the night before. Water temps have been as high as 56F. There is an afternoon hatch of BWO's14-16 and March Browns 12 not too many fish working them from what I've seen. Not huge numbers but, nice fish 16-19" being landed while nymphing. Try dead drifting streamers or golden stones 6, Prince nymphs 8-12, PT's, FBPT's, egg patterns and Copper Johns 14-18.

The Little Truckee River Between Boca and Stampede has been good for experienced anglers. The flow are moderate and the temps have come up a couple of degrees for a high of 47F. There are BWO's, Midges, and Caddis hatching at various times during the day with an occasional fish on the surface. For dries Try any BWO imitation 16-20, Griffiths Gnat 18-22, and EC-Caddis 14-16. Nymphing PT's, FBPT 14-18, Haresears 14-18, Princes 8, Flash Caddis 14-16, SJW, egg patterns, Brassie 16-20 and Turkey BH14-16. The fish have been between 15-19" and feisty so be ready.

Have a nice Memorial Day Weekend.
See ya on the water.

Brian
