It's been a busy couple of weeks around here. First, Dax and I entered OLN's Flyfishing Masters contest in San Francisco. We started of well but lost out on the accuracy portion. The contest was great fun and we learned a ton about casting. The program is supposed to air on OLN in September. We might be on TV! Second, the fishing has been outstanding, all venues are fishing good right now. Its time to quit your job and take me fishing!
High Country Lakes and Streams**
Things are starting to open up and the fishing is pretty good. The Mosquitoes are really hungry too. Take the bug spray.
Local Lakes and Reservoirs***
The inlets to Stampede and Prosser are still producing well especially in the evening. There is a little of everything floating out to the fish and they weren't to picky eating dries, nymphs, or streamers. Expect to catch an occasional smallie along with the rainbows. Using a pram or float tube at Prosser will help. For dries try Tan Caddis 14, Parachute Adams 12-16, and Ant Patterns. For nymphs try Flashback PT 12-16, Damsel nymph 10, BH Crystal Bugger green and black 6-10.
Rivers and Streams***
The flows on the Little Truckee have been ramped up to 189 cfs. There is nice midday hatches of PMD's and Drakes. The fish had a busy 4th and are well educated at this time. Try a Prince nymph 10, Turkey BH 10, Haresear 14-16, PT 14-18, brassie 16-18. For Dries try Parachute PMD 14-16, Quigley Cripple 10, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16 and Gulper special 16-20.
The Truckee River has also experienced an increase in flow up to 150 cfs out of Tahoe. The rafting between Tahoe City and River Ranch is in full operation. The river is very fishable all the way down to the State Line. The evening has been incredible, as good as it gets. Lots of Caddis and Little Yellow stones out and about. We've been able to catch fish throughout the day though not as fast as the last hour. The most successful nymphs have been Little yellow stone nymphs 14, Bird's nest 12-14, Golden Stone 8, Copper Johns 12-16, soft hackles 12-14 and Flash Caddis 14. For dries Little Yellow Stones 14, Stimulator 8-10, Parachute Adams 12-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14, Quigley Cripple 10-14.
If you haven't checked out The Trips page I'm hosting steelhead trips on the Rouge River in September. Loads of fun.
See you on the River
