Fly fishing Report Archives

June 10, 2004
The fishing as of late has been pretty good. The large flying ants are out and about providing us with some great action at times. Try not to get too excited when that big pig slowly raises up to ingest you offering by setting too soon. I've witnessed several missed fish from this. The Truckee has warmed up a bit and starting to fish better. BWO's and PMD's are around on both the Little Truckee and Truckee rivers. Haven't fished the reservoirs too much yet, but had an epic day on Milton recently. Just about any place and time you can catch a fish right now. If you are not having success where you are move. The next 2-3 weeks should be epic, expect to see some Green Drakes any day now. If you can make the time now is a good time to fish up here.

HIGH COUNTRY LAKES AND STREAMS

The streams are just coming into shape right now. There is still a fair amount of snow hanging on the north slopes this may affect some of the streams. You'll just have to check them out on an individual basis.

Milton*** Fishing very good right now. Caught it when the Ants were out a few days ago. Total "Hero Fishing"! The fish were not into anything else, however, the callibeatis are happening and are my first choice of flies if the wind isn't blowing. Caution! The mosquitoes are thick! Bring bug spray it will make you feel better even if it doesn't work. Dries: Ants when it's windy, when its not Parachute Adams, Bivisable Dun, Quigley Cripples and Griffiths Gnats 14-18. Nymphs: Flashback PT, Haresear, and midge pupa 14-18.

LOCAL LAKES AND RESERVOIRS

Boca, Stampede, Prosser** The Boca inlet is still the best place of the three to go right now. I have spent most of my time on the rivers lately and the times I've tried to fish these areas the wind drove me away. Have heard of a few Smallmouth Bass being caught in Boca. Light surface activity on Callibeatis and Blood Midges. The best bet is to strip streamers 4-8, PT's, and Flashback PT's 12-16 in the shallows or indicator nymph with PT's and Midge Pupa 12-14 along the edge of drop-offs

LOCAL RIVERS

Truckee River*** The Truckee is starting to turn on. During the next few weeks there will be some exceptional fly fishing to be had. The one thing that could mess it up for a few days is if they dump more water from Tahoe. Other then that the Drakes should be showing anytime now. Fish have been readily taking BWO's and PMD's in the afternoon. Hope for some overcast skies and be ready. Dries: Ants, Parachute Adams, Thorax Duns, Bivisable Duns, Quigley Cripples, 14-18, Stimulator 8-10. Nymphs: Copper Johns, Haresears, Birdsnest, Caddis Pupa, Little Yellow Stones 12-18. Stones and Green Drakes 4-10. Streamers 4-10 most of them will work right now.

Little Truckee River** to*** The flows have dropped since the last report to the low 300's and will probably drop some more. The fish are starting to wise up and a good presentation will help your success here. I've taped several Rainbows at 19" and a couple of Browns at 22". There is a little bit of everything happening here keep an eye out for working fish. Dries: Parachute Adams, Sparkle Dun, E/C caddis, Comparadun, Quigley Cripple 14-18. Nymphs: Copper Johns, PT's, HBI's, Prince, 16-18 and Green Drake nymphs 8-10.

See you on the water,

Brian
