Fly Rishing Reports - Archives

May 23, 2005
We are enjoying our fourth day of California sun, a rarity this month. Last week was rainy and ugly with over five inches of rain in the upper elevations. This event combined with the warm sunny weather has most of the area streams and rivers runny high and muddy. The fishing up to this event had been fair to good depending on location. Not allot of numbers but some large fish were landed, taped, and released. Several Browns and Rainbows over 20 inches made it to the net. It will take some time for the Truckee river to clear up and drop to a fishable level. While we're waiting for the Truckee to get into shape there are still several opportunities around the area.

High Country Lakes and Streams *
Still too early with all the snow this year. Mid to late June for lower stuff and July-August for the upper elevations.

Truckee River *
Very High and off color. The area from Tahoe City to River Ranch is fishable. Try nymphing and streamers there wasn't much hatching yet.

Little Truckee ***
The LT has been the place. Flows have been around 140cfs and the fish are home. There has been some hatches of various Caddis, mayflies, stones, and midges. This has been a busy place and the fish are getting a little picky. For me, my indicator has been the best surface pattern, and the dryfly patterns have not. I have witnessed others getting grabs. For dries try; parachute adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Quigley Cripple, BWO's, PMD's, Royal Wulffs, and Griffiths Gnats. For nymphing try; Copper Johns, SJW, Brassies, haresears, AP's, flashback PT's and HBI's. Haven't bothered with streamers but a small fish type imatation such as Woolley Buggers and Clouser Minnows are good choices.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede Reservoirs ** to ***
The area reservoirs have been on and off some scouts are reporting great action and others are saying its slow. The inlets streams are pumping lots of stuff in to the reservoirs and the fish are getting plenty of grub. Watch the shoreline Mud, its soft so don't drive too close. There is a morning callibeatis hatch but not many fish taking them on top. Most fish were taken dragging nymphs and streamers on sinking lines. For nymphs and streamers try; Flashback Haresears, PT's, Blood Midges, Woolley Buggers, and Clousers.

See you on the water

Brian
