Fly Fishing Reports - Archives

Monday June 13, 2005
Time for a little update on the Truckee area. Like most of the northern part of the state we experienced some rainy weather most of last week with the weekend being sunny and warm. Looks like that trend will continue for awhile. The area waters a in good shape. The fishing has been decent too. We haven't been getting huge numbers of fish but the quality has been excellent with lots of fish in the 16-18" range and several in the 18-20" range. Some very exciting battles were fought.

The water is clear and starting to drop on the Truckee still a little high but fishable. Temperatures are still in the low 50's by mid afternoon but, that could change with a week of sunny weather. The smaller streams in the area are also clearing and warming. They are an option for those looking to avoid people. Beware, the mosquitoes are waiting! Bring the GOOD bug spray.

Boca, Prosser, and Stampede are fishing well. Seems like the smallmouth in Prosser are doing OK, had a report of "Trout on one side and Bass on the other". When driving around these reservoirs beware of the mud. It's pretty soft out there with the recent rains.

High country Lakes and Streams*

Some areas are starting to open up. Most are still weeks away from being accessible. Check with the Forest Service before heading up. The number for the Truckee office is 530-587-3558.

Local Rivers and Streams

Truckee River** to*** The main Truckee is clear, high, and very fishable. Not allot of surface activity yet but, that could turn on any day. The water temps are still cool. Nymphing with large bugs has been good with several nice fat bows and browns landed. No whitefish yet. For nymphs try: Copper Johns 14-12, Haresear 14-12, Flashback PT's 14-10, Prince 10, Drake nymphs 10-8, Little Yellow stones 14-12, Goldenstones 10-6, and Woolly Buggers 10-6. For Dries: Parachute Adams 14-10, Stimulator 10-6, Elk Hair Caddis 14-10, Drakes 10 and PMD 16-14.

Little Truckee River*** The LT has been the place to be low flows and nice hatches during the mid-day. This is the best dry fly action right now. However, its not easy the fish have seen some action and will make you work for their attention. Hanging a nymph under a dry has been producing when the fish aren't working on top. For dries: PMDs 14, PMD Cripples 14, BWO's 18-16, BWO Cripples 18-16, Sparkle Duns 18-16, Compara Duns 16-14, Spinners 18-14, Griffiths Gnat 20-18, Palamino Midge 22-20, and Parachute Adams 20-14. For nymphs try: Haresear 18-14, PTs 20-14, HBI 18-14, Brassie 20-16, and Birdsnest 18-16.

Prosser***, Boca**, and Stampede** The reservoirs are starting to come alive with Prosser fishing the best right now. Boca is fishing well but you want to go early before the water skiing and jet skis start tearing around. Again, here the fishing is still subsurface either with an indicator or stripping with sinking line. The smallmouth in Prosser are active and will eat just about anything. While stripping for trout at the inlet I hooked, landed, and taped and 18" smallie. Pretty big surprise when I got it in. The callibeatis haven't started yet in large numbers but, the midges are out and about. For dries try: Martis Midge 16-14, Griffiths Gnat 16-14, Parachute Adams 16-12, and Ants 10. For nymphs and Streamers try: Haresear 14-12, PTs 14-12, Brassies 16-12, Copper Johns 16-12, Clouser Minnows 10-6 and Woolley Buggers 10-6.

See you on the water,

Brian
