Fly Fishing Report - Archives

August 14, 2006
It is the peak of the tourist season here and most of the local destinations are seeing a fair amount of fishing pressure. The N. Yuba may be the exception. During the week, I have only seen one or two other anglers during the whole day. And, as a bonus, the fishing has been pretty good most of the day. The "dog days of summer" are upon us in the Truckee area and fish tend to move into the pocket water and deeper holes on the Truckee. My favorite method for this time of the year is the Dry and Dropper and working the seams around boulders and at the head of the pools. Move along if your not seeing any fish. The flows have been stable now for a few weeks and I suspect a change is coming. You can check the flows on my Venues page. Another fly angling option is to go after the bass off the dams and rocky structure of the local reservoirs. They are always willing to eat.
Starting on August 21st thru the August 29th I will be on a fishing trip and not checking my e-mail. I will be checking the answering machine whenever I can. Call (530-550-9780) or my cell (530-386-0525) to leave your message. If you want guide service during this period check out the Truckee Guide Network, Frank (530-587-7333), Doug (530-412-2988), and John (530-582-8548) should be able to help.
Steelhead are just around the corner and once again I will be working at Morrison's Lodge on the Rogue River. Check out the Trips page. I still have a few open dates in October: 1,2,3,4,18,19,20,21,22,29,30,31. These dates, depending on availability, can be booked by calling the lodge at (1-800-826-1963).
High Country Lakes and Streams***
Prime condition right now for dries and dry droppers. Ants, Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis 14-18 and PT's and Hareseare's 14-18 underneath should be all your need.
Truckee River**-*** The river above Boca inflow has been beat early and late in the day. The dry and dropper method will produce results. Down stream from Boca the water is much bigger and nymphing or streamers are the best bet during the day. There are some hatches during the evening as well. Dries: Stimulators 6-12, E/C Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Yellow Stones, Para Adams, Quigley Cripples and Bivisable Duns 12-18. Nymphs: Copper Johns, BHPT's, Stones, Caddis Pupa 12-16.
Little Truckee*** The LT is fishing good despite the large numbers of anglers on the water. These fish are educated and will not respond well to poor presentations. Bugs are still hatching during the mid-day PMD's, Flav's, Drakes, midges and the occasional Caddis are the dries of choice 16-20. Hanging a small nymph under the dry is working during the slower periods.
North Yuba*** Good dry fly action all day on Ants, Stimulators, Bivisable Duns, and Caddis 10-16. Black AP's and smaller stones have been effective nymphs 14-18. Indicator nymphing in the deeper pools has produced some bigger fish.
Local Reservoirs**-*** The trout have moved into deeper water 12-24 feet so target them with streamers and the appropriate sinking line. The bass are hitting white and yellow poppers and Sneaky Pete's 8-12. A rubberlegged yellow Stimulator 8-10 will work as well if you don't have any poppers. Short strip and a long pause should do the trick.
See you on the River,
