Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Thursday, June 5, 2007

Lets start by saying the fishing in the Tahoe area is pretty good now and should just get better over the next several weeks. The bugs are just starting to hatch in the Main Truckee River around town and are in full swing lower down towards Reno. The local reservoirs are also fishing pretty well and it appears the callibeatis have started hatching on Prosser and Boca. The Flows are low and make for some excellent fly fishing.

Truckee River*** The flow throughout the system is low and the water temps are in the high 50’s great conditions for us fly fishers. Lower down towards the state line the hatches are in full swing. Drakes, PMDs, Little Yellow Stones, and Caddis are popping most evenings. As you move up to the town of Truckee PMD’s, BWO’s, Caddis and Terrestrials round out the mix. The Drakes should be any day from now on. For nymphs try: Prince 8-6, Little Stones 14, Burk’s Hunchback Green Drake 10-8, Haresear 16-12, Green Rock Worm 14, emergent pupa 14, and Micro May 18-16. For Dries try: Parachute Adams 16-10, Elk Hair Caddis, 16-14, Little Yellow stones 14, Compare Duns 16-12, Quigley Cripples 16-10, and E/C Caddis 16-14.

Little Truckee River*** The flows here have dropped and are bouncing around some days. The fish are there and as picky as ever. Look in and fish the shallows before stepping in the water. I have been able to pick up some fish here using an Attractor Dry and a Dropper. For dries try: Para Adams 20-14, PMD 16-14, Compara Duns, 20-14, Quigley Cripples 18-14, E/C Caddis16-14, and ANTS. For nymphs try: HBI 16-14, Micro May 20-16, PT 18-14, Prince 16-12, Copper Jons 18-14, and SJW’s.

Local Reservoirs**-*** Prosser and Boca are fishing well before the wind starts blowing. There are Callibeatis and Midges hatching. Streamers in green and black have also been effective here. For dries try: Parachute Adams 14, Throax Dun 14, and Quigley Cripple 14, Martis Midge 14, and Griffiths Gnat 16-14. For nymphs try: PT’s 16-14, Midge Pupa 16-14, and Damsels 12-10.

High Country Lakes and Streams** I have yet to make it up to Milton this season. Reports are mixed. Now is the time to try a big ant there.

North Yuba I have yet to get over there either. Just having too much fun on the Truckee. The flows have come down some and I would think that hatches have started there just like the Truckee. A big ant with a dropper should work nicely.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to arrange a trip.

See you on the water,

Brian
