Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives
|
Wednesday, August 5, 2009
Since the last report it has been warm up here and the water temps are reflecting that, hitting the low 70's in the evenings on the Truckee. Fishing early in the day and the evenings have been best. Fishing during the heat of the day has been tough. Presentation is probably the most import thing right now. The fish have seen anglers of all abilities and don't respond well to poorly presented flies. I can help you tune up you skills for this tougher time of year.
I have had some great sessions with the smallmouth bass in Prosser and Stampede. Even managed to catch some trout. The boat based fly fishing I offer on these reservoirs is different than you would expect and we usually have way more action than on the moving waters. Also, the DFG has changed their minds and planted Prosser and Boca with some very nice looking rainbows.
There is construction on I-80 east and west of Truckee so some access points are not available for parking and traveling, during the peak times is a bitch.
Andy Burk, noted fly tyer, rock hound, and artist has opened a small shop at the United Trails RV Resort off the Hirschdale exit. He is featuring the flies that he has designed, some tackle, and artwork. His flies are very cool!
Truckee River**-*** The Truckee is fishing pretty good in the morning and evening. The middle of the day is very slow. Flows out of Tahoe are dropping on a daily basis and the water is quite warm. If you not catching fish move. Caddis has still been the best producer. Now is a good time to dead drift that Crayfish you been packing around for years. For dries: E/C Caddis 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Little Yellow Stones 14, Stimulators 10-14, Green Drakes 10, and Parachute Adams all sizes. For Nymphs: PT, 14-16, Haresear 14-16, Birdsnest 14-16, stone nymphs 10-16, Copper Johns 14-16. and Crayfish 8-10.
North Yuba*** Well, I finally made it over to the N. Yuba a couple of times and had a ball. The N. Yuba is fishing quite well for small feisty fish on dries. Take the little rod and have a ball. Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, E/C Caddis, 14-16, Stimulator 10-16, Royal Wluffs 14-16, Humpys 14-16, and Ants 10-16. No need to nymph here, these guys will crush a well presented fly.
Milton Reservoir*** I have had some good sessions here in the past couple of weeks during the late afternoon evening. Midges seem to be big on the menu but, callibeatis and ants have gotten the grabs as well. For dries: Ant 10-14, BWO's 16-20, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, Parachute Adams 20-14 midge emergers 18-20 and Callibeatis 14. For Nymphs: PT's 14-20, Brassie 18-20, Zebra Midge 18-20 and Birdsnest 14-18. Streamers in 6-10.
Prosser, Boca, Stampede**-*** The DFG has planted both Prosser and Boca witch will provide some better action then we have been having out there on trout. Like most of the areas right now fishing is good early and late in the day. Head to one of the dams and fish for the Smallmouth Bass during the heat of the day. You may have to experiment with speed of retrieve but, usually slower is better. They are eating just about anything on top. Try poppers 8-10, Stimulators 10, Grasshoppers 8-10, Griffiths Gnat 16-18 and Parachute Adams 14-16. Under an indicator try Haresears, PT's, Princes, Copper Johns 14-18 and Crawdads 10-6.
