The fishing in the area has been great considering the time of year, August. We have had some cool nights and not too warm days and the fish are liking it. The Truckee is fishing well from Town to Stateline. Prosser is still kicking out some BIG smallmouth. For those willing to drive a bit more Milton is fishing well. Mid-day is slow so take a long lunch and a nap and then hit it hard until dark.
It is time to start thinking about Steelhead. I have been up to the Rogue and already landed a 29" adult. It is too early to tell how big the run will be but, numbers are already ahead of last year and that is good news
Truckee**-*** The big Truckee from town to stateline is fishing well in the morning until 1 or 2 then slows until around 5. There are still some caddis coming off and a few small mayflies. Lots of hoppers on the bank. Most of the major hatches are done for the season and its a good time for the terrestrials. The flow from Tahoe is dropping daily with Prosser and Boca dumping water to fill the need. For dries: E/C Caddis 16-18, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Stimulators 10-14, Hoppers 10, Ants 12-16, and Parachute Adams 16-20. For Nymphs: PT, 14-18, Haresear 14-16, Birdsnest 14-16, stone nymphs 8-12, Copper Johns 14-16. and Crayfish 8-10.
Yuba *** The Yuba fish are getting a little spooky so use some stealth and scale down the offering. Elk Hair Caddis 14-18, E/C Caddis, 14-18, Stimulator 10-16, Hoppers 10, Humpys 14-18, and Ants 10-18.
Milton*** If you like the small fly challenge then Milton is the place. Lots of small midges and mayflies. The fish have been looking up throughout the day. The Roadie Cove has some nice fish eyeing the bank in search of the next snack.
For dries: Ant 10-14, BWO's 16-20, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, Parachute Adams 20-14 midge emergers 18-20, Hoppers 10, and Callibeatis 14. For Nymphs: PT's 14-20, Brassie 18-20, Zebra Midge 18-20 and Birdsnest 14-18. Streamers in 6-10.
Prosser, Stampede*** The Trout have not been too cooperative here but, the bass have. The surface temps have been in the mid 60's and the Bass have been really aggressive. The dams have been great and anywhere there is a pile of rocks there are some Bass around. Fishing under an indicator and striping small or very large streamers have been the most productive. If you don't get hits move. Try poppers 8-10, Stimulators 10, Grasshoppers 8-10, Griffiths Gnat 16-18 and Parachute Adams 14-16. Under an indicator try Haresears, PT's, Princes, Damsels 12,Copper Johns 14-18 and Crawdads 10-6.
Davis*** Based on the water temps at the reservoirs here I ventured up to Davis Lake to see what was going on. Well, the fish are there and they are hungry. Very fishing little pressure. The fish were on the Blood Midges 12, callibeatis nymphs 14, and damsels 12. Fishing under an indicator and stripping on a sinking line.
