Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives
|
Saturday, April 3, 2010
As I sit down to write this it has been snowing pretty good for the last few days, especially at the higher elevations. The skiing conditions are the best of the season. The mountain is filled in, the new snow is cold and deep. Oh, but, this is a fishing report. The fishing has been good when the sun and temps cooperate. We are in that transition time of year and anything is possible with the weather. Once this latest series of storms leaves us the fishing will quickly improve.
Tip of the Month
Take advantage of the down time and check out your gear. Now would be a good time to fix that hole in your waders that you been putting off. Check you reels, lube them, and replace those cracked fly lines. Give the old rod a little bath and take a look at the ferrules and reel seat. A little TLC now will save grief down the road.
Truckee River** The Truckee is still under the winter regs until the last Saturday of the month. Aside from alittle mud most of the accesses are usable. There are even a few bugs coming off and fish eating them. This is the exception not the rule right now nymphing is still the most productive. Down towards the state line there is a little bit of everything starting to make an appearance and as you move up towards Truckee bugs are more sparse. There are still Midges(18-22) and BWO's(16-22) around. Skwalas(8-10) and March Browns(14) are starting to show.
Little Truckee** Out on the LT there is still some snow on the road but, most is gone. Nymphing has been good and some occasional surface activity has brought up a few fish. It is still early. Little brown stones(12-10) are out crawling about. BWO's(14) are hatching and the occasional Skwala(8-10). Use a little stealth when approaching the water and you might get a shot a fish working the stones on the edge.
Now is the perfect time to plan a trip to the Truckee area. Later this month skiing and fishing on the same day will be possible. Early season is the perfect time to work on casting skills or brush up on any of the fly fishing skills. Give me a call and I will be happy to arrange a custom trip for you.
I also wanted to mention that I will be at the Kiene's annual Fly Fishing Fair on April 17th from 9am to 5pm.
See you on the water,
Brian
