Fishing Report for October 1, 2014

Fall is here!  The rain came last weekend and knocked out the King Fire, got rid of the smoke, and gave the watershed a little boost.   Some frost in the mornings and warm afternoons make for some great fishing.   Although the rain helped the flows for a few days it is only temporary  and flows are low and continuing to drop.  The fishing has been great though.

Currently, and for the month of October, I will be guiding #Steelhead on the #Klamath River in Northern California.  If you are looking for a guide in the Truckee Area or Pyramid Lake Call Jay Clark 530-414-1655.  If you are looking for a Steelhead trip I have a few days left at the end of October.

Truckee River***  The flows on the Truckee at Boca are 61 cfs boosted by 36 cfs coming out of Donner Lake.  Water temps were 52 in the morning at 56 mid afternoon.  The rain and cooler temps gave the river a short lived boost of water and pumped up the fish. There is a little BWO hatching and fish are keying on the dries and nymphs.  Caddis are also out and about but in much smaller numbers.   The takes have been super fast and subtle.  Tightline technique with dries and nymphs are your best bet for hookups.

The Little Truckee **  The flows here are holding steady at 41 cfs and the water temp is good.  It is time for the Kokanee and Browns to make their fall spawning runs.  I have only seen a couple of Kokanee at this time.  If you do see fish spawning give ’em a break and stay of the redds!  Smaller Midges, BWO, and Little Stones have been hatching out here.  Go small and use some stealth and lookout for MR. Brown.

See you on the water,
