It has been awhile since the last report. Really haven’t been fishing much until last week. Went out with the spey rod to demo a new shooting head and a couple of running lines, wasn’t even thinking I’d see a fish. A fish started working just downstream of my position and I worked by it with a couple of streamers. No Love. Switched over to a dry fly and three casts later had a beauty on the end of my line. First fish of the year, on dry, with a spey rod! Thats the way it should start.
Truckee**-*** The flows are dropping after the last round of storms and the weather looks to be pretty nice through this weekend. 105 cfs in town and 382 at Boca. e My thermometer is way off but, guessing the water temps to be in the low 40’s. Skwalas are on the menu of some of the fish in the Truckee right now. Not a numbers game and prospecting with a large dry is pretty darn cool when it works. On the overcast days there are still some BWO’s coming off as well. Try nymphing with Mirco May 16-18, Stones 10, Midges 16-18, SJW’s, and Haresear 10-14. Or, For dries try Skwala 10, Throax dun 16-18, Parachute adams 16-18, Quigly Cripple 16-18 and Compara Dun 16-18.
Little Truckee ** The flows are 170cfs and the water temp is in the mid 40’s. Probably smart to head out with two rigs. One with a nymphing setup and the other rigged with a dry. Nymphing until you spot a rising fish then switch to the dry. Look for the cloud cover for the best topwater action. Most of the same stuff for the Truckee will work here as well. Try smaller Midges 18-22, BWO’s 28-20, and Little Brown Stone 16.
The ski season is still hear so make some turns in the morning and hit the river in the afternoon.
