Fishing Report May 18th, 2014

The season is starting to get going here in #Truckee.  It appears most things are about two-weeks, if not more, ahead of normal.  The big carpenter ants started flying last week and have made for some exciting moments of top water action.  Time to get up here and get in on the action!

Truckee River**   The flows in town are 221 cfs and at Boca 615 cfs. It has been really nice but, really windy as well with mid-day water temps at 58.  Thing are shaping ups nicely with lots of bug coming off during the day.  But, being the Truckee not many rising fish to be seen.  The Ant was working on top fished blind and the Stones were taking care of the subsurface action.  Try nymphing with Mirco May 16-18, Stones 10, Midges 16-18, SJW’s, and Haresear 10-14.  Or, For dries try Ants 10, March Browns 12-14, Thorax dun 12-18, Parachute adams 12-18, Quigly Cripple 16-18 and Compara Dun 16-18.

LT**-***  The Little Truckee flow is at 325 cfs and very fishable.  These fish are very wise and your are going to have to work to get a few.   Some, not all, of the locals here were all about the big Ant.  For Drys try Ants 10, PMD 16, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, EC Caddis 18, and Elk Hair Caddis 16-18 Nymphing withMidges 18-22, BWO’s 16-22, and Little Brown Stone 16, SJW, Micro May 16-20, and WD-40 18-22.  Streamers are also worth a shot with the higher flows.

Milton***-****  Milton is on!  Others know about it too and it was very busy out there this weekend.  The fish were busy keeping the anglers busy releasing them.  Here as well as most waters the Ant was big on the menu.  Most everything I tried worked.  Dries, stripping nymphs, and hanging midges under an indicator sizes 12-16

N. Yuba  Given the fishing around here I have to believe that the N. Yuba is fishing well too.  Ants, Golden Stones, and big Mayflies should do the trick there.

I am pretty excited about the Ant this week.  For me, those big crushing takes are what fly fishing is about and this is one of those bugs that brings the big boys out to play on top  in the middle of the day and starts the dry fly seasons for me.
