Fly Fishing Report April 6th, 2018

Well it looks like the big water is here a little earlier than last season.  Not to worry you can still catch fish just got to change your tactics a bit.  The fish aren’t super happy fight the current all day so look for them to be in the softer areas near the banks or on the inside of turns.  The water now is cold and there is tons of food being dislodged, the fish don’t have to do much to get a bite to eat.  With that said, slow and deep is the call.  Whether fishing a streamer or nymphs put in their grill, get it down to where the fish are holding.  Flows are supposed to peak mid-day Saturday.

Just a reminder that we are still in the Winter Fishing Season here in California and the Truckee is open from Trout Creek down to the Stateline.  The Little Truckee is open between Boca and Stampede.  Both are artificials only zero kill.  The general opener is the last Saturday in April.  That would be the 28th this year.

At this time Montana is a go!  Thanks to those who signed up early,  However, I still have a couple of openings for those that are on the fence.

Truckee **  Big water with 1,890cfs coming through town and 3,590cfs at Boca. Water temps are in the low 40’s.  Streamers and Deep nymphing in the slow edges is your best bet.  Try Pat’s Rubber legs 8-10, Mercer’s Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10, Flashback PT 12-14, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Birdsnest 10-14, and Prince Nymphs 8-10.  For Streamers Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10 and Sculpin patterns in green and tan 4-8.

Little Truckee**-***  Flows here are 775cfs and temps in the mid-40’s.  This ditch is tough to wade at these flows.  Don’t try to cross it!  Same as Truckee fish the edges and slow deep pockets.   The access it good just watch for mudslides below Boyington Mill campground.

See you on the water,
