Happy Black Friday! Conditions in the area are prefect for getting out and wetting a line. The weather is in the mid 50’s and there is water in all of the creeks and rivers from last week’s storm event. Looks like we are headed for another cool down and maybe more snow. Time to get outside and fish. For those looking to get something for their fisher person I do sell Gift Certificates for Full-day and Half day trips.
A reminder that we are in the Winter Fishing Regulations Season! That means that the Truckee is only open from Trout Creek to the Stateline and the Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede. For both it is Zero Kill and Barbless hooks. Consult the regulations if you have questions.
Truckee River** The flows are 1190cfs in town and 1550cfs at Boca. The water is pretty clear because it is mostly coming out of Tahoe. The best time is to fish the heat of the day. Concentrate on the edges and look for the deeper slower runs at these flows. Bug wise things are generally smaller with Midges 18-22 and BWOs 16-20 making up the bulk of the hatches. Stones are around in smaller sizes 10-14 so don’t be afraid to roll with one when nymphing.
Little Truckee River**-*** The flows are 98cfs out of the dam. Access is still great so the LT is probably pretty busy with anglers. Might be a few Browns still spawning so give em a brake and let them finish. It has been nice enough to expect some mid-day hatches of Midges 18-22 and smaller Beatis 16-22. Be prepared to fish drys and nymphs.
Local Reservoirs** Access is still good to Prosser, Boca, and Stampede. Be aware of the mud with the recent rains and don’t drive to close. Stripping Streamers 4-8 and small nymphs 14-18 while walking the shoreline is usually good for a fish or two.
I have made the transition from Fly Fishing Guide to Ski Patrolling for the winter. Not much fishing in my future as we are gearing up for snow and training on over $4 million in new avalanche mitigation tools that were purchased this summer.
See you on the water,
