About -
Four Seasons Fly fishing

As an outdoor enthusiast, I, Brian Slusser, was drawn to the Truckee Tahoe area for the outstanding skiing. However, I found a bonus in the excellent fly fishing for wild Rainbow and Brown Trout in the Truckee River. During the winter months, I am a full-time Professional Ski Patroller. During the summer, I am a fully addicted fly fishing nut.

It is my goal to provide a safe, fun, and informative outing for my clients. Along with my avalanche rescue
dog Shooter I welcome the opportunity to share my passion for fly fishing with anyone from the beginner to the seasoned veteran. Women and children are encouraged. The group size is limited to four persons per guide.

It's summer time in the Sierra and all of the fishing opportunities are available and now is the time to get out and enjoy what the area has to offer. The waters have all warmed a bit and will continue to throughout August. The reservoirs are fishing well for Trout during the morning and evening hours and the Smallmouth are willing during the heat of the day. The rivers are fishing good and there and been a nice Caddis hatch on the Truckee everyday. For those of you needing a dry fly fix, the North Yuba is great for small wild fish. And, if you what a small stream to go with the small fish then head up the the higher elevation lakes and streams. The Mosquitoes have backed of a bit and it is bearable to stand around and fish.

If some of you are looking ahead to fall now is the time to book a Steelhead fly fishing trip with me at Morrison's Lodge on the Rogue River in Oregon. It should be a good season on the Rogue. That area had a much wetter winter then we did here are there is more water in the system this season. Last I checked there were already Summer Steelhead in the Upper Rogue. Book it now for the best dates 1-800-826-1963.

Truckee River **-*** The big river is, well, Big! There is currently 400+/- cfs coming out of Lake Tahoe so wading can be a chore in some areas. The fish are looking up and eating all day long. The evenings have been great with Caddis and Little Yellow Stones. The big fish of the system have a little more cover and you'll probably need to go deep with the indicator rig or sinking line and streamers to interest them. For Dries try Elk Hair Caddis 14-18, Little Yellow stones 14-16, Stimulator 8-16, Light Cahill 14-18, rusty spinners 14-18, and EC Caddis 14-18. For Nymphing try Copper Johns 12-16, Haresears 10-16, Birdsnest 14-16, soft Hackles 14-18, crawfish 6-8, and woolley buggers 6.

Little Truckee*** The LT is fishing well too. It has been very popular. That is a nice way of saying crowded. These fish are picky, if you can't make the presentation with the right bug forget it! If you looking to test you skills this is were to go. A little stealth and a drag free drift will help. Green Drakes have been hatching for a month now, very cool. For dries: PMD's 16-14, BWO's 18-16, cripples 18-16, Sparkle Duns 18-16, Spinners 18-14, Drakes 10, Parachute Adams 18-10, Griffiths Gnat 20-18, and Palamino Midge 22-20. For nymphs try: Haresear 18-14, PT's 20-10, HBI's 16-14, Birdsnest 18-16, Prince 10, Drakes 10 and Brassies 20-16.

North Yuba*** I have only ventured as far down as Downieville, but, from there on up has been great dry fly action. The fish are not huge and have a lot of gusto for their size. Great place to spend a day with a light rod. For dries: Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, E/C Caddis 14/16, Stimulators 8-16, Ants 8-16, and Little Yellow stones 14. Didn't even brother nymph the last couple trips. Hang a PT, Copper John, or Caddis under a dry and have fun.

Local reservoirs**-*** Prosser, Boca, and Stampede have been fishing well for trout in the morning and evenings. The Bass are also willing to eat especially when things are slow during the heat of the day. If fishing is slow on the Truckee or LT, head over to one of the dams and give the Bass a try. About the only change would be heavier tippet. They eat trout flies. Midges, Ants, and Callibeatis are on the menu of the trout. Stampede has the better Callibeatis hatch now. Dries: Parachute adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-16, Ants 10-16, Martis Midge 14-16. Nymphs: Flashback PT's, PT's 14-18, Blood midge 14-18, callibeatis 14-16, damsels 10-12, and woolley buggers 6-10.

High Country*** Hit the little streams while you still can. Without some rain these are going to be very skinny in a few more weeks. The wild flowers have been great and well as the fishing. For the streams try attractor dries and terrestrials on top and PT nymphs, haresears, and caddis patterns underneath. You may have to go deeper in the Lakes with a woolly bugger or damsel pattern.

If you have questions or what to book a trip feel free to contact me.

See you on the River,

Brian
