This report is for the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. I skipped a week while I was on my hosted trip in Montana which was super fun. Not much changed here while I was gone which sort of surprised me. We have had really consistent flows on both rivers for most of the summer. Although the afternoon water temps above Boca have warmed the morning session on the Truckee has been great.
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
The conditions on the Truckee River have been very consistent and so has the fishing. About the only change is that the bugs are becoming smaller and fewer. The Hopper Crop looks good in some areas along the river. Clients have been wrestling with a number of smaller and medium sized fish while also getting shots at some larger ones too. Looking ahead, I feel we are set up for a pretty decent fall season depending on what happens with the flows and weather.
Truckee River Conditions
The Flows on the Truckee near town are 275cfs and mid-day temps very from 66-68 degrees. At Boca the flow is 525cfs and water temps mid-day are slightly cooler especially in the first mile below the Little Truckee in flow.
Truckee River Tactics
The hatches have started to wane and what bugs are hatching have gotten smaller. Time to down size. Nice Trico hatch this week for those into fishing the micro flies. The Hopper Crop seems to be in healthy shape as well in some sections. Consider other terrestrials like Ants and Beetles. Dries and Dry/Dropper rigs are still producing. It is also the crawdad time of year. Dead drifting a Crawdad Pattern under an indicator in the big deep runs can get some really nice fish this time of year. May have to experiment a little to consistently hook up.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report Summary
The fishing continues to be good and is best in the morning. If fishing dries time to downsize and try Tricos in the morning. Dry Dropper rigs are good all day. Indicator nymphing with a crawdad for the big one.
Little Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
The Little Truckee River is still fishing well, it has gotten a little tougher as it does this time of year. Mayflies, Caddis, and Midges are all still hatching but a little smaller. Hoppers are out and about as well. It is technical fly fishing Far and Fine.
Little Truckee River Conditions
The flow on the Little Truckee is down slightly at 90cfs and the mid-day water temp is 56 degrees in the lower section. Plenty of bugs hatching at different times during the day.
Little Truckee River Tactics
Time to downsize the bugs are getter smaller and the fish are getting wiser. May have to downsize the tippet as well. For the Dry Fly guys this is Far and Fine time. Longer casts, a longer leader, and smaller tippet. Hopper/Dropper set ups will work here too when nothing else is going on. It also pays to be quiet when approaching a run and try to wear some drab colored clothes. It is hot but don’t wear a white shirt unless you want all the fish to run from you.
