Truckee Area Fly Fishing Report June 28, 2018

The Truckee Area Fly Fishing has been outstanding overall!  Great weather and lots of willing fish.  Morning and evenings have been really good with lots of bugs hatching.  It has been warm and things are changing a bit.  I currently have openings this weekend.

Truckee River Fishing Report

Prefect conditions for the Dry Fly Fishing at this time.  The Green Drakes are pretty done but there are plenty of other bugs hatching.  Golden Stone, Yellow Sallies, BWO’s, Caddis, Midges, and seeing a few PMD’s.

Truckee River Overall Conditions

The flows on the Truckee River are up from last week 271cfs in town and 498cfs at Boca.  Water temps in the mid-day are at 64 degrees and hitting 67 by 5pm.  Fishing the AM half of the day has been pretty good and so has the last couple hours.  Dry Fly all the way!

Truckee River Tactics

Dry Fly Fishing Baby!  Dry/Dropper during the heat of the day.  Put the nymphing rig away for awhile and enjoy some crushing surface takes.  Fishing the faster water with  Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, and Golden Stones will get grabs.  Fishing slower water with Mayflies, Midges, and Spinners.

Truckee River Fishing Report Summary

The Truckee River is in Prime Shape for all day Dry Fly Fishing.  Get up here and fish before it changes.

Little Truckee River Fishing Report

The Little Truckee is in transition time right now lots of algae.  Mayflies and Midges on or near surface are the ticket.  Waiting on PMD’s and Green Drakes to start here.

Little Truckee River Overall Conditions

The Flow on the LT is 95cfs and temps mid-day in the upper stretch was 48.  With the warm weather expect it to be warmer by the inlet into Boca.  There is a bunch of algae there and expect to have to deal with it.

Little Truckee Tactics

Tactics for the Little Truckee are Dry Fly and Dry with shallow droppers to avoid the algae.  Smaller Mayflies and Midges right now.  Anticipate PMD’s and Green Drakes to start heavier hatches soon.  That will be fun!  Sight fishing is the key right now.

For Dry Flies

Compare Duns 16-18, Thorax Duns 16-18, Spinners 16-18,  PMD’s 14-16, Quigley Cripples 14-16, Parachute Adams 14-20, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, BWO 16-20, Green Drakes 10, Elk Hair Caddis 16-18, and E/C Caddis 16-18.

Little Truckee River Fishing Report Summary

Sight fishing with smaller Mayflies and Midges right now.  Anticipate the PMD’s and Green Drakes to start out here soon.

North Yuba River Fishing Report

The North Yuba is in prime Dry Fly Fishing shape right now.  Great place for the Tenkara rod or light fly rods.  Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, and Goldens Stones are the ticket on this freestone river.

North Yuba River Overall Conditions

The flows on the North Yuba are low, perfect for Dry Fly Fishing.  Expect the temps to be warmer the farther down you get below Downieville.  Maybe too warm to fish in the afternoon /evenings down that far.

North Yuba Tactics

The North Yuba is a Freestone river that at this time of year is fed mostly by springs and the occasional rainstorm.  Dry fly mecca for the light rod or Tenkara.  Fish here are not huge but are super fun!  Miles of pocket water and deep pools.  Hit the pocket water as the day warms up.

For Dry Flies

Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Little Yellow Stones 14, Ants 10-12,  Goldens Stones 10, Parachute Adams 14-16, and E/C Caddis 14-16,  Spinners 14-16, and Quigley cripples 14-16.

North Yuba River Summary

Great conditions for the North Yuba.  Dry Flies here all day. Probably the hardest thing about fly fishing here is the wading.  You will be hard pressed to find a prettier river.
