Truckee Area Fly Fishing Report June 30, 2018

Recently changed my Truckee Area Fly Fishing Report format a bit. I thought I would do one for Prosser, Boca, and Stampede Reservoirs.  The Reservoirs are fishing well and you can target both Trout or Smallmouth Bass at this time.  Could be a great option if the Truckee and Little Truckee are a scene over the holiday week.

Prosser, Boca, and Stampede Reservoirs Fishing Report

Good action on the Reservoirs for Trout and Smallmouth Bass both from shore and from a floating device.

Reservoirs overall Fishing Report

Yesterday’s surface temp at noon on Prosser was 66 degrees and I imagine that Boca and Stampede are at similar temps.  Although, where the Little Truckee comes into Boca will be colder because that water is much colder than the streams coming into Prosser and Stampede.  Trout have moved out into deeper water and the Smallmouth have become more active.

Reservoir Tactics Trout

The trout may be up in the shallows feeding on Midges early but quickly move out to the deeper water as the sun gets higher in the sky.  The inlet areas are still holding quite a number of fish. If the wind is not nuking you may see fish rising to Calibeatis from mid-morning till mid-afternoon.   Nymphing under and indicator is working good.  And finally getting some action on streamers stripping a sinking line.

Reservoir Tactics Smallmouth Bass

The rocky dam faces and anywhere there is some structure, like a stump, will hold a Smallmouth Bass.  Nymphing under the indicator is working good and stripping streamers on a sinking line as well.  Conditions have not been good for topwater when I have been out so can not comment on that but I am sure its not far off.

Good thing about Smallmouth is that they like trout flies.  No need to worry about having another selection of other flies.  Well, maybe some poppers.

Dry Flies

Ants8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-18, and Blood Midges 16-18.

Haresear 14-16, Birdnest 14-16, Blood Midge 16-18, Calibeatis nymphs 14-16, Flashback PT 14-16, Zebra Midges 16-18, and Sheeps Creek 14-16.

Woolley Buggers 4-8, Clousers 6-8. Crawdads 6-8, and Leeches 4-8.

Prosser, Boca, and Stampede Reservoirs Fishing Summary

The Trout and Smallmouth fishing is happening on Prosser, Boca, and Stampede.  If the rivers are too crowded or the water is too warm give one one the Reservoirs a try.  Your trout flies will work on the Smallies too.
