Truckee Area Fly Fishing Report Sep 13th, 2018

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

The Truckee River will be the topic of today’s fly fishing report.  There have be some changes to the flow regime since my last report.  Lake Tahoe releases have been turned down and the Donner release turned up.  The best flows are from Donner Creek on down.  The cooler weather has really helped the water temps as well.  October Caddis are starting to show up in light numbers.  It is going to be a great fall.

Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Truckee River have changed.  Flow from Lake Tahoe is 75cfs.  The water master has started to drop Donner Lake and Donner Creek is adding 210cfs to the Truckee River in town. The flows at Boca are 441cfs.  Mid-day water temps are 62 degrees.  Great conditions for this time of year!

Truckee River Tactics

October Caddis are starting to show in light numbers.  There are also some small Mayflies and Caddis around and well as the Hoppers.  The Hoppers don’t start moving until it warms up a bit more of an afternoon thing.  Drys and Dry/Dropper techniques are still working.  Indicator nymphing is good especially in the cool mornings.  It is time to break out the Big Streamers.  The Brown Trout should be starting to stage for their spawning and will get after streamers that come by their turf.  Lots of options for anglers right now.
