Truckee Fly Fishing Report May 2, 2018

The Fishing this past week has been pretty good around Truckee-Tahoe area.  The flows have dropped some and the water is clear.  Looking at a nice warm up for the end of this week and weekend. This should cause some of the side creeks to turn a little turbid in the afternoons.   Now is generally the time that people catch their fish of the year.

Have your tried Tenkara?  I am offering Tenkara as an option for a guided trip.  Tenkara is a Japanese style of fishing that is very simple and clean.  Rod, Line, and Fly, no Reel.  Give me a call and we can set up a Tenkara trip.  530-386-0525.

Orvis 301 classes are offered at anytime.  Call with your date or dates and I will get you out on the water and hopefully hooked up to a fat Trout.  530-386-0525.

Truckee River **-***  The flows are 450cfs out of Tahoe and 1070cfs at Boca.  The temps are in the mid 40’s with the water rising a bit in the afternoons.  Not much has changed in the bug department since last week.  For Nymphs try Try Pat’s Rubber legs 8-10, Mercer’s Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10,  Flashback PT 12-14, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Birdsnest 10-14, and Prince Nymphs 8-10.  For Streamers try your standard Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10 Or, bust out some of the newer Sculpin patterns in green, white, and tan 4-8.

Little Truckee River ***  The flows here are 106cfs and temps are in the mid 40’s.  Expect the fishing to be tough as the flow is low for this time of year and the rainbows are coming off the spawn.  Probably going to see some hatches here but, nymphing works pretty good.  For Dries try  Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples14-18, Midges 18-22, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Skwalas 10-12, and BWO’s 16-20. For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 10, Copper Johns 10-16, Micro May 16-18, SJW’s, Zebra midge 16-18 Pheasant tails 14-18,  Flashback PT’s 14-18, Haresears 12-16, and Princes 10-16.  Streamers are worth a try as well.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede**-***  Be aware of the mud here and don’t drive too close to the edge.   Boca inlet area is fishing well for multiple species Rainbows, Browns, and Kokanee.  I have had a number of  reports of good Smallmouth fishing in Prosser.  Nymphing and Streamers on a sinking line are both working pretty well.

See you on the water,
