Truckee Fly Fishing Report

Well the flows have come down nicely and we are set up for some decent spring fishing.  There is a little bit of a cool down coming this weekend through Tuesday but that is Spring in the Mountains.  Saturday is the general trout opener, Yah!  Check those regulations so you know which apply to the body of water your fishing.  Now is the time to tie into one of the Truckee River Monsters that you here so much about.  I have plenty of openings give me a call and we’ll sent something up.

Truckee River***  The flows on the Truckee are 922cfs in town and 1,240cfs at Boca.  Water temps are in the mid 40’s.  This is a good weekend to try some streamers or be on the lookout for some afternoon BWO’s and March Browns.  Nymphing is still the go to technique but doesn’t hurt to try something else.  For Nymphs try Try Pat’s Rubber legs 8-10, Mercer’s Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10,  Flashback PT 12-14, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Birdsnest 10-14, and Prince Nymphs 8-10.  For Streamers try your standard Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10 Or, bust out some of the newer Sculpin patterns in green, white, and tan 4-8.

Little Truckee River**-***  The flows here have dropped significantly in the last couple of weeks and currently at 109cfs.  Temps in the mid 40’s.  Fish here are probably a little grumpy with the up and down flows as well as the Rainbows are trying to Spawn.  If you see fish Spawning leave them to do their thing and try another spot.  Probably going to see some hatches here but, it is spring and nymphing works pretty good.  For Dries try  Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples14-18, Midges 18-22, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Skwalas 10-12, and BWO’s 16-20. For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 10, Copper Johns 10-16, Micro May 16-18, SJW’s, Zebra midge 16-18 Pheasant tails 14-18,  Flashback PT’s 14-18, Haresears 12-16, and Princes 10-16.  Streamers are worth a try as well.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede**-***  Be aware of the mud here and don’t drive too close to the edge.   Boca inlet area is fishing well.  Nymphing and Streamers on a sinking line are both working pretty well.  Had reports of good Smallmouth fishing in Prosser as well.  Worth a look if you favorite river spot is busy.
