Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
The Truckee River and Klamath Steelhead with be the topic of this Report. Flows in the Truckee Area have dropped since the last update and well as the temperature. It has been fishing great during the heat of the day. Mostly smaller bugs now but, a great time to throw streamers.
I have been spent the last month guiding on the Klamath for Steelhead with is why I haven’t updated much. Not much service up here. Finish up guiding next week and sold all open dates for this season! Fish are here and Fishing is good.
Truckee River Conditions
The flows have changed a bit with the outlet at Tahoe dumping 80cfs and at Boca the flow is 336cfs. Water temps are in the high 40’s.
Truckee River Tactics
Now is a good time to chase the big boys from Boca on down. Deep nymphing or stripping ugly big streamers are the tactics of choice. Fish during the heat of the day when the water temp has come up a few degrees. There are some BWO’s out and about for the dry fly purest.
Suggested Nymphs and Streamers
For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 6-10, Twenty Incher 8-10, Prince Nymphs 8-10, Black Zebra midge 16-18, Copper John 16-20, Birdsnest 16-18, Flashback Pheasant Tail 14-18, SJW, Haresear 14-16, Fox Poohpa 16-18, Burk’s Bottom Roller 16-18, and Micro May 16-18.
For Streamers the Woolley Bugger works pretty good but, so do some of the more modern streamers. The Sparkle Minnow 4-6, Dali Llama 2-4, Zoo Cougar 4-6, and Sculpzilla 4 are just a few.
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report Summary
The Truckee is still fishing pretty good. No need to get out early water temps are cool in the morning. Head out to the skinny water for dry fly action or head down in the bigger water to chase the meat eaters. Still lots of good fly fishing opportunities out there.
Klamath River Steelhead Report
It is a good year for the Klamath Steelhead. Sizable half-pounders and some nice adults in there as well throughout the whole system.
Klamath River Conditions
The flows out of Iron Gate are 1,010cfs and 1,240cfs at Seiad Valley. Water temps are in the low 50’s. Prefect conditions right now. It was almost too nice on Monday! Fall colors are in full effect.
Klamath River Tactics
Swinging flies has been really good some days and slow on others. If you can find a pod of fish the first few will eat on the surface and then you might have to change to a weighted fly or light tip. Don’t need the heavy stuff yet.
There are loads of Salmon around this season so nymphing with Legs and eggs is also effective. Maybe too effective.
Klamath River Flies
For Swinging flies Silver Hilton 6-8, Green butt anything 6-8, October Caddis 6-8, Western Coachman 8-10, and Herniator 8-10.
For nymphing flies Pat’s rubber legs 6-8, Rubber Legged Prince 8-10, and Copper Johns 8-10. Oh and egg patterns.
Klamath River Steelhead Summary
The Klamath River is on fire for steelhead right now. Great action on swung flies or nymphing down deep. The fall colors are a bonus as well.
