Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report June 13, 2018

What a difference a week of sun can make.  Pretty decent late spring fishing around here.  Flows are good and water temps on freestones rivers and creeks are warming up!  The bugs are starting to hatch a little more each day and the fish are looking up as well.  The ant hatch was good and and fish are still moving to it.  Better get here while it is not so busy.

The Truckee-Tour Trout Tour  is a two-day event for the experienced angler looking for access options and a techniques for our area.  Day 1 will be Truckee and Little Truckee. Day 2 small creeks and N. Yuba.  8am to 5pm each day and costs is $650 a person.  Call or email to sign up limited to four anglers. 530-386-0525

Truckee River*** The flows are down to 159cfs near Truckee and 374cfs at Boca.  Mid-day water temps are in the High 50’s now with the nice weather and the fish are more active and looking up.  There are still Mayflies hatching and now starting to see more Caddis and Little Yellows Stones out and about.   Given the flows Dry/Dropper technique is great for the upper reaches of the Truckee.  While down below Boca Nymphing will still be the best option for all day.  For Dries try  Ants 8-10, Elk Hair Caddis 14, Stimulators 8-14, E/C caddis, Humpy’s 14, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-18, March Browns, 14-16 and Royal Wulff 12-16.   For Nymphs try Try Pat’s Rubber legs 8-10, Mercer’s Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10,  Flashback PT 12-14, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Burk’s Bottom Roller 14, Iron Sally 14, Birdsnest 10-14, and Prince Nymphs 8-10.  For Streamers try your standard Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10, Sculpin patterns in green, white, and tan 4-8.

Little Truckee**-***  The flow is down a bit at 98cfs and the temps are in the Mid 40’s.  With that fishing has been great one day and tough the next.  The fish are a bit spookier at these flows and you may need to drop the tippet size.  Given the algae bloom Dries or dries with short drops will keep your flies clear.   Ants, Midges, BWO’s, PMD’s, and even some Caddis out and about.   For Dries try Ants 8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples14-18, Midges 18-22, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Skwalas 10-12, and BWO’s 16-20. For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 10, Copper Johns 10-16, Micro May 16-18, SJW’s, Zebra midge 16-18 Pheasant tails 14-18,  Flashback PT’s 14-18, Haresears 12-16, and Princes 10-16. Sclupzilla Streamers 8 have been popular.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede ***  Stampede and Prosser are fishing great.  Midges and Calibeatis under an indicator is the ticket again this last week.  The water is warming up so expect to have to go deeper.  For Dries try Ants 8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-18, Hares Ear nymphs 14-16, Birdnest 14-16, March Browns 14-16, Callibeatis 14-16. and Blood Midge 16-18.   For nymphs Callibeatis nymphs 14-16, Flashback PT 14-16, Zebra Midges 16-18, and Blood Midge 16-18.  For Streamers try your Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10.
