Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report May 30th, 2018

The weather looks like it has turned nice for a bit.  I was really enjoying the cloud cover that the last couple of weeks weather had brought us, fishing was pretty darn good.  Hard to say what is going to happen with flow releases from the dams but they are currently dropping in the natural springs and feeder streams.  We have water!  The Ants are here!  The Big ‘Ol Carpenter Ants are out and about.  Fish love them whether on the river or the lake the fish will be keying in on them over the next week or so.

Have your tried Tenkara?  I am offering Tenkara as an option for a guided trip.  Tenkara is a Japanese style of fishing that is very simple and clean.  Rod, Line, and Fly, no Reel.  Give me a call and we can set up a Tenkara trip.  530-386-0525.

Truckee River*** The flows are 568cfs near Truckee and 837cfs at Boca.  Mid-day water temps are in the low 50’s.  With the overcast weather there were plenty of Mayflies hatching BWO’s and March Browns.  Managed to pick up fish on top but, nymphing has been the most productive all day.  For Dries try  Ants 8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-18, March Browns, 14-16 and Royal Wulff 12-16.   For Nymphs try Try Pat’s Rubber legs 8-10, Mercer’s Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10,  Flashback PT 12-14, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Birdsnest 10-14, and Prince Nymphs 8-10.  For Streamers try your standard Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10, Sculpin patterns in green, white, and tan 4-8.

Little Truckee**-***  The flow is at 153cfs and the temps are in the high 40’s.  Flows have been bumped up and down over the last week and it looks like they are going up again.  With that fishing has been great one day and tough the next.  Midges, BWO’s, PMD’s, and even some Caddis out and about.  Nymphing and Streamers have been getting the most attention here.  Look for that to change soon.  For Dries try Ants 8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples14-18, Midges 18-22, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Skwalas 10-12, and BWO’s 16-20. For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 10, Copper Johns 10-16, Micro May 16-18, SJW’s, Zebra midge 16-18 Pheasant tails 14-18,  Flashback PT’s 14-18, Haresears 12-16, and Princes 10-16. Sclupzilla Streamers 8 have been popular.

Prosser, Boca, Stampede ***  Stampede has been great in all of the inlet areas.  Midges and Calibeatis under an indicator has been hot!  Getting follows on streamers but not many eats.  For Dries try Ants 8-10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Quigley Cripples 14-18, Hares Ear nymphs 14-16, Birdnest 14-16, March Browns 14-16, Callibeatis 14-16. and Blood Midge 16-18.   For nymphs Callibeatis nymphs 14-16, Flashback PT 14-16, Zebra Midges 16-18, and Blood Midge 16-18.  For Streamers try your Woolley Buggers  green and black 4-10.
