The Fly Fishing in the Tahoe Truckee Area still very good although a bit cooler this time of the season. For me, I am currently guiding #Steelhead on the #KlamathRiver in Northern Californian for the month of October. This report will focus on Klamath River Steelhead.
For this early in the season there are some really nice fish throughout the whole system. The flows are slightly higher than usual due to some earlier rain. Rain is forecast for later this week as well. The overall temps have been a little cooler that normal so dress in layers. There has been frost in the mornings and we transitioned to shorts in the afternoons.
Klamath River Conditions
The flows out of Iron Gate are 1,150cfs and 1,510cfs at Seiad. Clarity is good for the Klamath as it is alway slightly tannin colored. Water temps are in the mid 50's.
Klamath River Tactics
The Klamath Steelhead are aggressive fish and will readily hit a swung fly and this is the time to swing flies, before the salmon start spawning. That time is now! Don't be afraid to skate a dry. The October Caddis are starting to appear. Nymphing is a good bet as well especially as the water cools later in the month. For now swing away with confidence. If your not hooking up try a different run.
Klamath River Suggested Flies
For Swinging flies the traditional flies work here very well. Skunks, Silver Hilton, Burlap, and Herniators in 6-8 should do the trick. For nymphing rubberleggs are a standard, as well as Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs, Caddis Poopah, and Egg Patterns.
Klamath River Summary
The fish are in and spread out through the system. Some half-pounders and very nice adults are available. Definitely worth going out.
