Truckee River Fly Fishing Report March 8, 2019

The topic of this report will be the Truckee River. We are coming off a record snowfall month here in Truckee North Lake Tahoe area. With all of the snowfall access to the fishing can be a problem. Most of the roads have huge snowbanks and the parking areas are being used for snow storage. Snowshoes, X/C skis, or snowmobile will get you there but, parking is a challenge. On the other hand, skiing has been super and the mountains are FAT with snow. Should have good water this year and better fly fishing.

We are also in the Winter Regulations time of year which means zero kill, artificial lures, or flies, and only certain sections of the Truckee River and Little Truckee River are open. Consult you regulations here https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing

Truckee River Conditions

The Truckee River is currently 1,250cfs in Truckee and 1,670cfs at Boca. Water temps are 38-40 degrees and clear. The water master is currently dumping 1,160cfs from Lake Tahoe to make room for snowmelt. Not sure how long that will last? Given that we are in for some unsettled weather and cold nights coming up this week expect to see some anchor ice build up.

Truckee River Tactics

Nymphimg is going the to be the most productive Truckee River Tactic this time of year. The water is cold and fish are not moving to far for food. With the unsettled weather there could be brief hatches of BWO's when there is cloud cover. Expecting to see a few Skwalas out and about as well. Dry/Dropper rigs can be very productive when the BWO's and Skwalas are hatching. Fish the heat of the day. Check out the slower, deeper runs, and margins. Ski in the morning fish in the afternoon.

Suggested Nymphs and Dries

For nymphs try Pats Rubber Legs 6-10, Twenty Incher 8-10, Prince Nymphs 8-10, Zebra Midges 16-18, Copper John 16-20, Birdsnest 16-18, Flashback Pheasant Tail 14-18, SJW, Haresear 14-16, and Micro May 16-18. For Dry Flies try Skwalas 10, Winter Stones 16-14, Griffiths Gnat 16, Quigley Cripples 14-18, Compara Duns 14-18, and Thorax Duns.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report Summary

Still in winter mode here on the Truckee. Try skiing in the morning and fishing in the afternoon. You will have to work to access the water with all of the recent snowfall.
