Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishing Report January 24th, 2020

Welcome to 2020! Hard to believe that this will be my 24th season of guiding here in #Tahoe #Truckee area. As with most seasons they are all a little different and this one appears to be following the trend of an average winter. That being said access in good all along the Truckee and fishing has been pretty good with some great days and some slow days. Up until today the skiing has been awesome and has been getting most of my attention. This report will focus on the #TruckeeRiver.

Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Truckee #River are currently 100cfs in town and 229cfs at Boca. Water temps are ranging from mid-thirties to high-thirties depending on the weather. In the mountains we are right at average for snow and water. Access is good but, the ground is very wet so beware of the mud.

Winter fishing regulations apply this time of year. Zero kill and barbless from Trout Creek to the state line!

Truckee River Tactics

The flows are low so fish will be in the deeper pools. Nymphing and Dry Dropper techniques will work best. Get you bugs low and slow. Midges and small BWO's are on the menu for the next month or so. Don't be afraid to change it up a bit as well and throw a big bug once and a while. On the warmer overcast days you may encounter some rising fish some be ready usually doesn't last too long.
