Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report April 26, 2024

The traditional start of fishing season is this Saturday and with that in mind this report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers. With the stellar warm weather we have been having the flows are currently up quite a bit as the spring runoff has started in earnest. With the colder temps on Friday I suspect that the water will drop some on the Truckee and then pick back up again as the warmth returns. It is good for the river to get a little flush every so often. Access is getting better around the area as well. The higher water presents some different conditions for our area and not all of the runs are going to be fishable or even wadeable. It is still early and cold so get it down, slow it down, and fish the edges.

I have a few clinics coming up for this spring and summer for those of you that are looking to improve your fly fishing skills.

  • Nymphing Clinic on May 18th

  • Women's Only Clinic on June 22nd

  • Trout Spey Clinic on July 20th

Truckee River Tactics

Access is good but crossing the river is a no go in many places until the water drops. Indicator Nymphing is generally the best bet. With streamers coming in a close second. Fish the edges and soft seams around the big boulders. Use larger flies, bigger tippet, and contrasting colors that fish can see. It is a great time to find a large fish out and about.
