Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report for Fall September 10th, 2026
Fall is in the air! Just a short update here from Truckee. I have been waiting for the water coming from Lake Tahoe to get turned down. Well, that process started yesterday and continued today. Don't know how low they are planning on dropping the flows. This changing will affect the sections from Tahoe City to Truckee and Truckee to Boca Bridge. Boce Bridge is pretty close to the same as they have turned up the outflow of Boca Reservoir to match what is now not coming from Lake Tahoe. This is an annual thing here and the fish will take a day or so to settle into there changed environment. It should be pretty good fishing and may spur on more hatches of BWO's, Midges, and Caddis.
This last weekend was Labor Day and of course I was out on the water with clients. The previous weeks cool down has turned the fish on. The fly fishing was great and we managed to wrangle quite a few fish with a couple of bigger fish on the Dry! It looks like another cool down for the weekend so if they don't keep turning the water off the fishing should continue to be outstanding.

Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River is flowing at 138 cubic feet a second above Truckee and 483cubic feet a second at Boca Bridge. Water temps are at 56-58 at noon. River water clairty is good. Be aware that the water flow from Lake Tahoe is being turned down and maybe lower than what is reported here.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River tactics have changed with the cooler weather and lower waterl evels The dry fly fishing was great this past weekend. The fish still looking up and the bugs are going to get smaller. Dry fly rigs are my first choice but, given the lower water levels Dry/Droppers are excellent. On the overcast days Streamers are working well too. Nymphing is also another good option. Truckee River suggested flies: Dry flies: Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Royal Wulff 10-12, Ants 14-18, Parachute Adams 14-18, Purple Haze 14-18, Thorax Dun 14-18, Sparkle Flag 14-18, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Spent Caddis 14-16, E/C Caddis14-16, Missing Link 14-16, Spinners 16-18, and Quigley Cripples 14-18. For nymphs: Haresear 14-18, Burks bottom roller 14-16, Deep Sparkle Pupa 14-16, Z-Wing Caddis 14-16, Micro May 16-18, Rainbow Warrior 14-18, Pheasant Tail 12-18, Flashback PT 14-18, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-18, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 6-14, Twenty Incher 8-14, and Princes 8-18. For streamers try Muddler Minnow 6, Woolley Bugger 6, Sculpzilla 8, and Sparkle Minnow 6.
Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River flow has started to be lowered in recent days and this will effect the sections from Tahoe City to Truckee and Truckee to the Boca inflow. The weather is great and the fish are active although looking for new hangouts as the water has dropped. Dries and Dry/dropper techniques are the goto in the upper sections. Streamers from Boca on Down. Get out and enjoy these conditions.
