This report will give a general overview of what is going on fishing wise in the Tahoe-Truckee Area. It is spring time here but winter is having a hard time letting go. The traditional opeing day of fishing season was on Saturday and in typical mountain fashion it was snowing and snowed for most of the day and again on Sunday. For those that got out and fished great job! I wanted to give a shout out to our local TU Chapter #103 for holding the 20th annual Fishmas Eve Celebration at the Blue Coyote the night before the opener. This is a fundraiser for our Truckee area watershed and the funds raised go to supporting projects in the Truckee Area. For our sponsors and those that went Thank You! For those that didn't you missed out on some super prizes. Check out the photo below.

The snow is mostly melted in the lower elevations but it is mud season here so watch were you drive. This weekends snow and melt have made it pretty gooey around here. Access to the reservoirs is opening up and most places along the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers are good to go. There have been some good trout and nice smallmouth caught in reservoirs so far. May be a place to check when the river is being stingy. The Truckee has been fishing pretty good and is trying to warm up but the weather is slowing that a bit. There are some Skwallas and BWO's still coming off in the afternoons and it is certainly worth a look. Haven't been on the LT in a while but hearing good reports coming form there as well.
Truckee River Conditions
The current flows on the Truckee River are 230 cubic feet a second above town and 680 cubic feet a second below Boca. Water temps east of Truckee is 46-48 degrees and the clarity is good throughout and very fishable. Still some runoff to come.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River Tactics for this report have not changed much since the last report. Carry two rods. A nymphing set-up of your choice and a dryfly set-up. Nymphing is the goto for best success all day. Work low and slow. The fish are cold and not going to move too far. As your moving around you might find a pod of fish working BWO's and Skwallas. A Dry/droppper rig could be the ticket along the shallower edges as well.
Truckee River Suggested Flies
Truckee River suggested flies: for dry flies try the Parachute Adams 14-20, Thorax Dun 14-20, Compara Dun14-20, Skwalla Stone 10-12, Royal Wulff 14-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Quigley Cripples 16-20, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-18, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Zebra Midge 18-22, Pheasant Tail 12-18, Flashback PT 12-18, Perdigons 16-20, SJW, Copper Johns 12-18, Frenchie 16 -18, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 10-18.
Truckee River Summary
It is Spring here with some varying weather so be prepared. The reservoir access is starting to open up and there has been some good bank action for Trout and Smallmouth Bass. Just be careful of the mud. The Truckee fishing is good and we are into spring conditions. Nymphing has been the most effective technique. Although there has been some nice hatches in the afternoons.
